ALkylamines are corrosive to copper, copper-containing alloys (brass), aluminum, 2inc, 2inc alloy, and galvani2ed surfaces. Aqueous solutions of aLkylamines slowly etch glass as a consequence of the basic properties of the amines in water. Carbon or stainless steel vessels and piping have been used satisfactorily for handling aLkylamines and, as noted above, some aLkylamines can act as corrosion inhibitors in boiler appHcations. [Pg.199]

There are many corrosion mechanisms which can take place in today s engines. The complexity has increased with the use of aluminum alloys in the head and block. Aluminum used in areas such as the head, where large quantities of heat are liberated to the coolant, is subject to a unique heat rejection corrosion. To protect against the heat rejection corrosion of aluminum, a coolant having special corrosion inhibitor systems must be used. [Pg.6]

If sea water is first deaerated, only a small amount of corrosion inhibitor, if any, probably would be needed to prevent attack on steel, or copper-base alloys. For aluminum, oxygen is needed to promote a protective film. [Pg.39]

Purposely added elements also often help to pinpoint an exact locus of failure as illustrated in Figure 11. Here a failure is shown to have occurred near the priner-aluminum alloy interface as indicated by SIMS and other spectra which showed elements of the corrosion inhibitor (strontium chromate) on the failure surfaces. Similar work using SIMS has been used to infer environmental corrosion resistance and to determine thickness of thin silanized surfaces... [Pg.237]

Corrosion inhibitors such as chromates, silicates, polyphosphates, nitrites, nitrates, borates and mercaptobenzothiazole have been used in corrosion inhibition of aluminum and its alloys.45... [Pg.236]

Benzotriazole and its derivatives have proved to be powerful corrosion inhibitors for many metals and alloys, including copper, solder, brass, steel, cast iron and aluminum, in e.g. heat exchangers, heating systems or automatic radiators. For some recent literature, see <79MI41102, 81JAP(K)81108882, 81JAP(K)81122884). [Pg.730]

This phenomenon degrades the Coulombic efficiency of the anode, then it has to be minimized for practical applications where high capacity is required. This could be overcome by particular aluminum alloys more resistant to corrosion, but the competing requirement of fast anodic dissolution makes very difficult the research of the suitable material [36, 37]. Another possibility to improve the anode performance is to modify the electrolyte composition by adding corrosion inhibitors [38]. The difficulties met up today in this field leave the possibility to use the aluminum-air batteries only as mechanically rechargeable systems, with practical performance (300-500 Wh/kg) very far from the theoretical values (Table 1.8 Fig. 5.14). [Pg.153]

Aluminum alloys are susceptible to underdeposit corrosion. Stainless steels are also susceptible to underdeposit corrosion as well as deep pitting. Anodic, cathodic, and filming inhibitors are used to mitigate corrosion (40). [Pg.183]

The presence of trace additives is a change in environment that can be good or bad for certain metal systems. It is necessary to know the behavior of the metal in the system toward various additives to establish whether this is a positive or negative effect. For example, the presence of copper ions in solution improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steels in certain environments, while the presence of copper ions in solution will cause localized pitting and attack of aluminum alloys in other solutions. There is yet the wider option of adding inhibitors that suppress the corrosiveness of the main species in the solntion. [Pg.593]

The power transmission system in North America consists of equipment that has been built up since the turn of the century. Although the design of individual components has changed, the materials of construction remained virtually the same steel and cast iron (bare, painted, or galvanized), aluminum alloys and copper alloys, porcelain, glass, and wood. Coatings and inhibitors are used to enhance the corrosion resistance of these materials. [Pg.722]
