Here we describe a method for injecting lentivirus directly into specific regions of the mouse brain. This method is applicable to any viral-based approach used in studies of CNS function in the mouse. In addition, this method can be used in any mouse strain required for the specific behavioral end point being studied. For instance, in studies of cocaine or alcohol addiction, an investigator may choose to use the C57BL/6J strain because of its robust response to cocaine and propensity to drink large quantities of ethanol, whereas for other alcohol-related behaviors, the DBA/2J mouse might be chosen (7). [Pg.284]

It has generally been assumed by alcoholism treatment personnel in most industrialized countries that the disease-labeling process and the alcoholic s concomitant acceptance of the "sick" role would facilitate treatment and potentiate the chances of rehabilitation. Some writers... however, question the utility of indiscriminate application of the disease label, not only because it may not be appropriate for all varieties of alcohol-related problems, but also because it may influence the very behavior it attempts to describe. This could come about... by altering the cognitive expectancies held by alcoholics and by those in their immediate social environment, such that the drinker no longer is seen as responsible for his or her behavior. In this view, loss of control over drinking may result more from learned expectations than from physical predispositions, and chronic alcoholism more from a dependency role than from physiological dependence. [Pg.259]

Over 50% of Americans who currently drink report having a close relative who abuses alcohol 25% are children of an alcoholic parent. Alcohol abuse can devastate families by causing separation, divorce, and domestic violence, as well child abuse and neglect. Six million children live with an alcohol-abusing parent, and this can result in problems at school such as low attendance, academic difficulties, attention deficit disorders, and behavioral problems. Each year in America, more than 100,000 people die from alcohol-related accidents (cars, falls, fires, drownings, burns), cancer, liver disease, and stroke. [Pg.28]

One resource the therapist, Ms. L, offered was that she could spend more time with Ms. A—45 minutes every week for several months. That time, in turn, gave them the chance to explore the connections among Ms. A s early life, her current life, her physical symptoms, and her alcohol use. Then, Ms. A s understanding of her own behavior helped her initiate changes in her alcohol intake and health-related behaviors. [Pg.149]
