Aging physical examination

After a lipid abnormality is confirmed, major components of the evaluation are the history (including age, gender, and, if female, menstrual and estrogen replacement status), physical examination, and laboratory investigations. [Pg.113]

An examination by the dentist should eliminate many of the potential systemic issues that can affect the periodontium of this patient. For example, the age of the patient, her appearance, and questions about her diet should be enough to rule in or out issues concerning puberty and malnutrition. However, if systemic conditions cannot be ruled out, an additional physical examination by a physician may be necessary. Additional tests to be requested could include oral glucose tolerance test for diabetes mellitus, human chorionic gonadotropin levels for pregnancy, and/or qualitative and quantitative evaluation of bone marrow cells and blood cells for leukemia. [Pg.506]

Before commencing the sessions the patients were assessed by physical examination and full medical history including age, sex, occupation, residence, special habits of medical importance with particular emphasis on the history of the underlying disease including duration of ulcer, mode of onset, ulcer pain, history of deep vein thrombosis or varicose veins, trauma, lump, varicosities, contact dermatitis and symptoms suggestive of ischaemia. Photographic reference of ulcer and ulcer area measurements were carried out at the commencement of treatment and during the follow up laser therapy, which continued for 6 months. [Pg.265]

A 35-year-old man presents with a blood pressure of 150/95 mm Hg. He has been generally healthy, is sedentary, drinks several cocktails per day, and does not smoke cigarettes. He has a family history of hypertension, and his father died of a myocardial infarction at age 55. Physical examination is remarkable only for moderate obesity. Total cholesterol is 220 and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level is 40 mg/dL. Fasting glucose is 105 mg/dL. Chest x-ray is normal. Electrocardiogram shows left ventricular enlargement. How would you treat this patient ... [Pg.221]

A study was carried out to determine a safe worker reentry period for phosalone on citrus (5). Fourteen male agricutural workers (volunteers), ranging in age from 18 to 72 years, were given physical examinations, including a blood ChE test, prior to three days of work in the citrus grove 14 or 21 days after it was sprayed with phosalone at six pounds A.I. per acre. Four men acted as controls. [Pg.46]

Pulmonary toxicity is dose-limiting for bleomycin and usually presents as pneumonitis with cough, dyspnea, dry inspiratory crackles on physical examination, and infiltrates on chest x-ray. The incidence of this adverse event is increased in patients older than 70 years of age and with cumulative doses greater than 400 units. In rare cases, pulmonary toxicity can be fatal. Other toxicities are listed in Table 55-4. [Pg.1302]

Physical examination revealed a hyperactive boy with normal height and head circumference. His face was somewhat square with a prominent forehead, everted ears, and absent left lower incisor, like his elder brother (Fig. 1-lb). Developmental quotient was assessed as 47% of normal. He had a short attention span but no social aversion or hand mannerisms. At the age of 20 months, EEG and acoustic brainstem response were unremarkable however, from 18 months, massive epileptic discharges had become evident in the bilateral parieto-occipital regions during sleep. [Pg.3]

Blood pressure should be measured on overweight patients as part of each physical examination. Based on her height and age.T.F. s blood pressure should be less than 120/80 mg Hg her blood pressure (100/70 mm Hg) was acceptable. Blood pressure curves are available that list acceptable blood pressure for patients based on their age and height percentile (http //www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/prof/heart/ hbp/hbp ped.htm). [Pg.247]

Healthy male subjects, aged 18-45 years (inclusive), with a Body Mass Index between 18 and 27 kg/m2 (inclusive), normal or clinically irrelevant abnormal findings (in the opinion of the investigator) in the medical history and physical examination, laboratory values, ECG, blood pressure and pulse rate, negative serology (HIV antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis C antibody) and urine screen for drugs of abuse. [Pg.674]

Healthy men aged 18 to 55 years and assessed as healthy based on findings in medical history, physical examination, blood pressure, pulse rate, and electrocardiogram (ECG) during screening. [Pg.716]

The causes of syncope in patients with Alzheimer s disease treated with donepezil have been reported in 16 consecutive patients (12 women, 4 men) with Alzheimer s disease, mean age 80 years, who underwent staged evaluation, ranging from physical examination to electrophy-siological testing (54). The mean dose of donepezil was 7.8 mg/day and the mean duration of donepezil treatment at the time of syncope was 12 months. Among the causes of syncope, carotid sinus syndrome (n = 3), complete atrioventricular block (n = 2), sinus node dysfunction (n = 2), and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (n = 1) were diagnosed. No cause of syncope was found in six patients. Non-invasive evaluation is recommended before withdrawing cholinesterase inhibitors in patients with Alzheimer s disease and unexplained syncope. [Pg.633]

Captain Bert Kribben and Captain G. H. Mangun were medical doctors and members of the Medical Division, CWS, and they were assigned full time to the Bushnell operation. At the edge of town they rented a large old two-story Victorian house for their offices and as a hospital. Their staff included male army nurses and other assistants. In January 1944 I went to them for my first physical examination, according to my agreement with Captain Nolen. One of the doctors told me that I could expect to live between ages thirty and forty. I told him that was what several other doctors had said. [Pg.148]

Gestational age Time from the mother s last menstrual period to the time the baby is born at birth, a Dubowitz score in weeks gestational age is assigned, based on the physical examination of the newborn... [Pg.2630]

Four male volunteers 1,2,3,4) participated in this study. Their ages ranged from 55 to 65 years. The physical examination revealed no abnormal features and their zinc status was within normal limits. [Pg.212]

Physical examination usually reveals diffusely increased muscle tone during infancy that normalizes with age. Tapping of the forehead results in excessive head retraction. Deep tendon reflexes are generally hyperactive. The preservation of consciousness and the absence of epileptiform discharges on EEG distinguish hyperekplexia from startle epilepsy (Andermann et al 1980). [Pg.98]
