Head, circumference

The physical growth scales used are those published by the National Center for Health Statistics percentiles which are based upon the work of Lubchenco et al. in 1966. The infant s weight, height, and head circumference were adjusted for sex and corrected for prematurity. [Pg.254]

The mean head circumference of the four males was at the 10th percentile. The one female s head circumference was at the 50th percenti1e. [Pg.254]

A study was conducted on 21 children, aged 18 to 36 months, to examine the potential relationship between the amounts of lead ingested in food and anthropometric measurements (height, weight, head circumference, and mid-upper arm circumference) (Stanek et al. 1998). The children resided in homes... [Pg.77]

Neonatal Cocaine freely crosses the placental barrier, and prenatal exposure to cocaine alters neurobehavioral development in rat pups (Sobrian et al. 1990). The effects on humans exposed prenatally to cocaine is a complicated matter, because so many other concurrent factors contribute to development. Common confounds are prenatal care and maternal polydrug use. Prenatal cocaine use is associated with reduced gestational age, birth weight, body length, and head circumference (Richardson et al. 1999). In children exposed prenatally to cocaine, some studies have shown behavioral differences evident at 1 to 3 years of age (Richardson et al. 1993 Richardson 1998). Associations are also made with impulsivity and attention deficits at age 6 (Leech et al. 1999). [Pg.138]

Abuse of cocaine during pregnancy is associated with increased rates of prematurity, low birth weight, respiratory distress, bowel and cerebral infarctions, reduced head circumference, and increased risk of seizures (Keller and Snyder-Keller, 2000). Infants prenatally exposed to cocaine show abnormal habituation and impaired attention. [Pg.247]

Physical examination revealed a hyperactive boy with normal height and head circumference. His face was somewhat square with a prominent forehead, everted ears, and absent left lower incisor, like his elder brother (Fig. 1-lb). Developmental quotient was assessed as 47% of normal. He had a short attention span but no social aversion or hand mannerisms. At the age of 20 months, EEG and acoustic brainstem response were unremarkable however, from 18 months, massive epileptic discharges had become evident in the bilateral parieto-occipital regions during sleep. [Pg.3]
