Thus the entropy of localized adsorption can range widely, depending on whether the site is viewed as equivalent to a strong adsorption bond of negligible entropy or as a potential box plus a weak bond (see Ref. 12). In addition, estimates of AS ds should include possible surface vibrational contributions in the case of mobile adsorption, and all calculations are faced with possible contributions from a loss in rotational entropy on adsorption as well as from change in the adsorbent structure following adsorption (see Section XVI-4B). These uncertainties make it virtually impossible to affirm what the state of an adsorbed film is from entropy measurements alone for this, additional independent information about surface mobility and vibrational surface states is needed. (However, see Ref. 15 for a somewhat more optimistic conclusion.)... [Pg.613]

The question is not trivial such agreement is not assured in the case of systems showing hysteresis (see Section XVII-16), and it has been difficult to affirm it on rigorous thermodynamic grounds in the case of a heterogeneous surface. [Pg.648]

The argtiments of Norman and his co-workers seem to give affirmative answers to the first and second of these questions, but it is doubtful if the available data further require such an answer for the third question. It can be argued that the crucial comparison made between the behaviour of benzyltrimethylammonium ion and protonated benzyl methyl ether is invalid, and that it is possible to interpret the results in terms of nitration by the nitronium ion, modified by protonation of the oxygen atom of the ether a case for the possible involvement of the nitro-nium ion in specific interaction leading to o-substitution has been made. ... [Pg.103]

As a result of a variable liquid-junction potential, the measured pH may be expected to differ seriously from the determined from cells without a liquid junction in solutions of high acidity or high alkalinity. Merely to affirm the proper functioning of the glass electrode at the extreme ends of the pH scale, two secondary standards are included in Table 8.14. In addition, values for a 0.1 m solution of HCl are given to extend the pH scale up to 275°C [see R. S. Greeley, Anal. Chem. 32 1717 (I960)] ... [Pg.931]

Health and Safety. The U.S. FDA has affirmed R%- and S(—)-maHc acid as substances that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) as flavor enhancers, flavoring agents and adjuvants, and as pH control agents at levels ranging from 6.9% for hard candy to 0.7% for miscellaneous food uses (42). R%- and A(—)-maHc acid may not be used in baby foods. MaHc acid is also cleared to correct natural acid deficiencies in juice or wine (43). [Pg.523]

Health and Safety. The FDA affirmed (R-R, R -tartaric acid as a generally-recognized-as-safe (GRAS) food substance (88). [Pg.527]

The printed pubHshed document which represents the patent rights granted by the Federal Government can be a complex Hterary work. There are specific and rigid legal requirements for the description, disclosure, and definiteness which support these affirmative rights and enable enforcement of those rights by the inventor or owner of the patent. The basis for this fiiU and complete disclosure of the invention in the patent is clearly articulated in the U.S. Constitution. [Pg.26]

A patent is intended to further the development of science and technology by providing a pubHshed record of technological developments for all to read, consider, and discuss. At the same time, a patent provides a delineation or definition of the rights which the patent owner considers its own through the claims appended to the patent. The pubHcation of a description of the invention in conjunction with the claimed limits of the invention provides the pubHc with notice of the patent owner s affirmative rights to the invention. [Pg.26]

Prima Facie Case and Affirmative Defenses. The imposition of strict tort liability did not mean that a plaintiff was entided to automatic recovery when iajured by a product. The foUowiag decisions set forth the basic elements that a plaintiff must estabUsh ia order to make out a prima facie case of products HabiUty and the affirmative defenses that either reduce or bar plaintiff s recovery. [Pg.99]

SheUac has been affirmed by the U.S. FDA (4) as GRAS for food appHcations. The most significant uses for sheUac are in food, for coating fmits and confections to preserve quaHty and appearance. [Pg.142]

Thaumatin (trade name Talin) is a very potent sweetener (ca 2000X, 10% sucrose solution sweetness equivalence). However, its potency is overshadowed by inferior taste quaUties. The onset of sweetness is very slow, and after reaching the maximum sweetness, a very long-lingering sweetness combined with an unpleasant aftertaste follows. Primarily owing to this poor taste quaUty, thaumatin is not considered a practically useflil sweetener. It is, however, used as a flavor enhancer, especially in products such as chewing gum. Thaumatin and thaumatin B-recombinant were affirmed GRAS flavors (EEMA no. 3732 and 3814, respectively). They are not approved as sweeteners in the United States. [Pg.281]

Lactisole [13794-15-5] the sodium salt of racemic 2(4-methoxyphenoxy)propionic acid, is a sweet-taste inhibitor marketed by Domino Sugar. It was affirmed as a GRAS flavor (FEMA no. 3773). At a concentration of 100 to 150 ppm, lactisole strongly reduces or eliminates the sweet taste of a 10% sugar solution. This inhibition appears to be receptor-related because lactisole also inhibits the sweet taste of aspartame. The 5 -( —)-enantiomer [4276-74-8] (38), isolated from roasted coffee beans, is the active isomer the i -(+)-enantiomer is inert (127). [Pg.284]

Thermodynamics is a deductive science built on the foundation of two fundamental laws that circumscribe the behavior of macroscopic systems the first law of thermodynamics affirms the principle of energy conservation the second law states the principle of entropy increase. In-depth treatments of thermodynamics may be found in References 1—7. [Pg.481]

Health and Safety Factors. The LD q of anhydrous sodium thiosulfate for mice is 7.5 0.752 g/kg (40). Because of low toxicity, it can be safely used iu veterinary medicine. Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is affirmed as a GRAS indirect and direct human food ingredient under the Federal Food, Dmg, and Cosmetic Act (41) (see Food additives). [Pg.30]

The U.S. Food and Dmg Administration (FDA) has affirmed the status of beeswax as Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) (5) in Tide 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 184.1973 (21 CFR 184.1973). The major use of beeswax is in the cosmetic industry, with smaller amounts used in pharmaceuticals and candle production. [Pg.314]

The major components of candelilla wax are hydrocarbons, esters of long-chain alcohols and acids, long-chain alcohols, sterols, and neutral resins, and long-chain acids. Typically, candelilla wax has a melting point of 70°C, a penetration of 3 drum at 25°C, an acid number of 14, and a saponification number of 55. Principal markets for candelilla include cosmetics, foods, and pharmaceuticals. The FDA affirmed Candelilla as GRAS for certain food apphcations in 21 CFR 184.1976. [Pg.315]

Sodium and potassium benzoate are substances that may be added direcdy to human food and are affirmed as GRAS (33—35). Benzoic acid and sodium and potassium benzoate are now used as preservatives in such foods as sauces, pickles, cider, fmit juices, wine coolers, symps and concentrates, mincemeat and other acidic pie fillings, margarine, egg powder, fish (as a brine dip component), bottled carbonated beverages, and fmit preserves, jams, and jellies. The popularity of diet soft drinks has led to increased demand for both benzoate salts. [Pg.56]

In the 1993 AATCC standard method (re-affirmed in 1988) a standard weight of dye (10 g) is dropped down a funnel into a cylinder of defined si2e. A wet filter paper is placed as a coUar to the funnel 200 mm above the bottom of the cylinder. After 3 min the stain on the filter paper, obtained by the dust created in the funnel dissolving on the paper, is assessed by comparing the standard photographs and the dye given the number of the picture it resembles the most (1 poor, 5 excellent). [Pg.377]

Postiilate 5 affirms that the other molar or specific thermodynamic properties of PVT systems, such as internal energy U and entropy S, are also functions of temperature, pressure, and composition. Tnese molar or unit-mass properties, represented by the plain symbols U, and S, are independent of system size and are called intensive. Temperature, pressure, and the composition variables, such as mole fraction, are also intensive. Total-system properties (V U S ) do depend on system size, and are extensive. For a system containing n moles of fluid, M = nM, where M is a molar property. [Pg.514]

Smaller companies can benefit by the assistance offered by these larger corporations. It is clear that access to information is of major importance when implementing efficient pollution-preventiou programs. By adopting such programs, industiy is affirming pollution prevention s application as a good business practice and not simply a noble effort. [Pg.2167]

The findings prove that peroxyacid oxidizes the reaction product from 2 to 3 moles of PMSA ai e spent per 1 mole of RP. If the components ai e mixed unintermptedly, the output of RP does not depend on the order of mixing. Value of (1.2-1.3)xl0 mole -cm -1 is close to values, given for other oxidants. At the sui plus of H Dm compai ed to nickel (6 1)3 moles of PMSA ai e spent per 1 mole of RP, while at the sui plus of PMSA (10 1) 3 moles of H Dm ai e spent per 1 mole of RP. The data obtained do not let us affirm what exactly oxidize in the RP - Ni(II) or H Dm. It is proved, that under conditions of formation, RP is not oxidized by PMSA. [Pg.162]

The candidate tollers security policy should emphasize the importance of protecting people, property and the operational practices against loss by intentional destruction or theft. During the site visit, check to see if appropriate methods are taken to control entiy and movement of people and vehicles as a security measure. One telltale sign is that you may be denied access to an area because of another company s confidential process. Though an interference, it affirms a sound security practice. Determine whether security inspections are being held during off-duty hours. [Pg.33]

Remember that your goal in monitoring PSM installation is affirmative, not... [Pg.176]

If your analysis of results suggests the need for intervention, or your team has devised a proposed solution to a problem you have identified, you may wish to include a "commentary" section at the end of your report. Alternatively, you may prefer to discuss these ideas informally with your PSM sponsor before committing them to a formal presentation. Either way, it s a good idea to be prepared to respond affirmatively to management questions. [Pg.182]

In Chapter 3, we studied the topic of population analysis. In population analysis, we attempt a rough-and-ready numerical division of the electron density into atom and bond regions. In Mulliken theory, the bond contributions are divided up equally between the contributing atoms, giving the net charges. The aim of the present section is to answer the questions Are there atoms in Molecules , and if so, How can they be defined . According to Bader and coworkers (Bader, 1990) the answers to both questions are affirmative, and the boundaries of these atoms are determined by a particular property of the electron density. [Pg.316]
