Polymeric plasticisers such as polypropylene adipate, azelate, glutarate and sebacate (or mixtures of these substances) are much less volatile than ordinary low molecular weight plasticisers. They are not easily extracted, and they weather well, but they cost more than phthalates and are not as easily processed, being mostly high viscosity substances. They are often blended with phthalates as a compromise. The polyester adipates are the most widely used.

Often non reactive plasticisers, such as saturated polyester adipates or epoxidised soya bean oils, are added in small quantities to thermosetting acrylics to improve the flexibility or drawing properties of the coating. 

Glyceryl mono- or diacetate is insoluble in fuels and oils but it may affect cure rate and other properties. The polyester adipate and glutarate are good for aliphatic and kerosene but not for aromatic fuels and solvents. Again the Uquid NBR is good in all fuels and oils. It should be noted that in meeting some specification requirements it may be necessary to use a more extractable plasticizer for low-swell test results but a combination of low- and high- extractability types is recommended to attain proper performance in the application.

Polymeric plasticizers are specialty types that are used in PVC formulations when extraordinary migration and extraction resistance are required. While different chemical classes of polymeric plasticizers are used, the most common type in the PVC market are liquid or near liquid polyester adipates. Typically, these polymeric plasticizers are in the 1000 to 13,000 molecular weight range (MW). While polymeric plasticizers have been used in PVC compounding for many years, developments continue. New polymeric plasticizers were developed for improved printing with waterborne inks and improved processing characteristics. This paper focuses on two new products and how they provide the required printability and processing characteristics.
