Adhesives from base polymers

Conductive adhesives are generally formulated from base polymers that are low-viscosity, thermosetting resins such as epoxies. Where elastomeric properties are required, silver-filled flexible epoxy and silver-filled silicone rubber systems are commercially available. [Pg.172]

Emulsion Adhesives. The most widely used emulsion-based adhesive is that based upon poly(vinyl acetate)—poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers formed by free-radical polymerization in an emulsion system. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is typically formed by hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl acetate). The properties of the emulsion are derived from the polymer employed in the polymerization as weU as from the system used to emulsify the polymer in water. The emulsion is stabilized by a combination of a surfactant plus a coUoid protection system. The protective coUoids are similar to those used paint (qv) to stabilize latex. For poly(vinyl acetate), the protective coUoids are isolated from natural gums and ceUulosic resins (carboxymethylceUulose or hydroxyethjdceUulose). The hydroHzed polymer may also be used. The physical properties of the poly(vinyl acetate) polymer can be modified by changing the co-monomer used in the polymerization. Any material which is free-radically active and participates in an emulsion polymerization can be employed. Plasticizers (qv), tackifiers, viscosity modifiers, solvents (added to coalesce the emulsion particles), fillers, humectants, and other materials are often added to the adhesive to meet specifications for the intended appHcation. Because the presence of foam in the bond line could decrease performance of the adhesion joint, agents that control the amount of air entrapped in an adhesive bond must be added. Biocides are also necessary many of the materials that are used to stabilize poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions are natural products. Poly(vinyl acetate) adhesives known as "white glue" or "carpenter s glue" are available under a number of different trade names. AppHcations are found mosdy in the area of adhesion to paper and wood (see Vinyl polymers). [Pg.235]

PDMS based siloxane polymers wet and spread easily on most surfaces as their surface tensions are less than the critical surface tensions of most substrates. This thermodynamically driven property ensures that surface irregularities and pores are filled with adhesive, giving an interfacial phase that is continuous and without voids. The gas permeability of the silicone will allow any gases trapped at the interface to be displaced. Thus, maximum van der Waals and London dispersion intermolecular interactions are obtained at the silicone-substrate interface. It must be noted that suitable liquids reaching the adhesive-substrate interface would immediately interfere with these intermolecular interactions and displace the adhesive from the surface. For example, a study that involved curing a one-part alkoxy terminated silicone adhesive against a wafer of alumina, has shown that water will theoretically displace the cured silicone from the surface of the wafer if physisorption was the sole interaction between the surfaces [38]. Moreover, all these low energy bonds would be thermally sensitive and reversible. [Pg.689]

Chain compositional heterogeneity is of particular relevance to functional copolymers which find widespread use in the coalings and adhesives industries.13,240,246 In these applications, the functional copolymer and a crosslinking agent are applied together and are cured to form a network polymer. The functional copolymers are based on functional monomers with reactive groups (e.g. OH), it is desirable that all copolymer molecules have a functionality of at least two. Nonfunctional polymer will not be incorporated and could plasticize the network or be exuded from the polymer. Monofunctional polymers are not involved in crosslink formation and will produce dangling ends. [Pg.381]

The main property that distinguishes a pressure-sensitive adhesive from other types of adhesives is that it exhibits a permanent and controlled tack. This tackiness is what causes the adhesive to adhere instantly when it is pressed against a substrate. After it has adhered, the PSA should exhibit tack, peel and shear properties that are reproducible within narrow limits. This requires that the adhesive layer be only slightly cross-linked.113 PSAs are based on polymers with low Tg, typically in the range-74 to +13°C.114... [Pg.174]

Ethicon, Inc., (Somerville, NJ) vendors Dermabond Topical Skin Adhesive for closing surface or skin type wounds. This material is not intended for internal use. Closure Medical Corporation manufactures the actual adhesive. Ethicon, Inc. is a Johnson Johnson company. Dermabond is chemically 2-octylcyanoacrylate and it cures on contact with water, ethanol and others (i.e., addition polymerization and catalysis by weak bases). For internal tissues, the excessive moisture can overcure cyanoacrylate by saturating its surface with moisture, cause disbondment from the substrate, and render it useless as an adhesive. The cured polymer possesses a hard and brittle consistency. [Pg.81]

The most widely used epoxy resins and adhesives are based on a prepolymer made from bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin. On treatment with base under carefully controlled conditions, bisphenol A is converted into its anion, which acts as a nucleophile in an S142 reaction with epichlorohydrin. Each epichlorohydrin molecule can react with two molecules of bisphenol A, once by S 2 displacement of chloride ion and once by opening of the epoxide ring. At the same time, each bisphenol A molecule can react with two epichlorohydrins, leading to a long polymer chain. Each end of a prepolymer chain has an unreacted epoxy group, and each chain has numerous secondary alcohol groups. [Pg.731]
