Adhesives for tiles

Bostik, Inc., formerly Bostik Findley, Inc., is a leading global producer of adhesives and sealants. The firm operates in five segments construction and distribution performance adhesives nonwovens/tape and label global transportation and flexible laminating. The construction and distribution division manufactures flooring installation adhesives for tile, stone, hardwood, carpet and vinyl caulks, elastic adhesives, aerosol adhesives, fire-retardant adhesives, epoxies,... [Pg.184]

Adhesives for ceramic tiles are specified by the standard EN 12004 2007 (Adhesives for tiles. Requirements, evaluation of conformity, classification, and designation), and includes performance requirements for cementitious, dispersion, and reaction resin adhesive types for all internal and/or external wall, floor and ceiling applications. Annex ZA, of this standard, sets out the requirements, which address the provisions of the Construction Products Directive (see O Sect. 35.4 below), and include assessments of durability. Compliance with these requirements confers a presumption of fitness for purpose for the applications and form part of a CE mark. In these cases durability is assessed by elevated temperature and/or water immersion accelerated ageing or freeze-thaw cycling of test specimens and then determining tensile or shear adhesion strength against minimum requirements. [Pg.914]

The largest market for elastomer-based adhesives is that of lamination (see Laminates). Modem office furniture having Formica as a surfacing material is made with an elastomer-based adhesive. Tile adhesives for ceramic or carpet tile are also elastomer-based and usually solvent appHed. Paper adhesives and shoe manufacture also use substantial quantities of mbber-based materials. Solvent-weld adhesives are used to join plastic plumbing and to repair vinyl sheeting. [Pg.235]

The other major uses of acrylic latexes are in textile finishing (e.g., stain and wrinkle resistance), adhesives, and floor polishes and waxes. Adhesives are used in many applications, including pressure-sensitive tapes, contact adhesives, and construction adhesives for carpeting and floor tiles. Peelable labels and stamps probably got their start with the Post-it note, invented by Spencer Silver and Art Fry at 3M company many years ago. [Pg.129]

Cellulose ethers have also been used in the ceramic industry (7). Since their appearance in 1959, water-based cellulose ethers have replaced solvent-based adhesives. The adhesives used for ceramic tile are ready-mixed products based on natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl acetate, and other resins, and they all contain cellulose ethers of one kind or another (e.g. MC, EC, HPMC, HEMC, HEC). These cellulose ethers reduce water loss, modify the viscosity of the mix, and can provide excellent adhesion for dry, very porous tiles. [Pg.299]

Vinyl monomers that can be grafted to cellulose to achieve adhesive properties are acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, and many others. Graft copolymers of cellulose derivatives have also found use as adhesives. For example, vinylacetate-grafted hydroxyethylcellulose can be used as an adhesive for packaging and tile ( ). Grafting of vinyl monomers onto lignocellulosic materials can convert them into suitable adhesive materials (0). [Pg.300]

In addition to the use of dry acrylic powders in cement mortars, other typical uses for these modifiers are in cement toppings, ceramic tile adhesives, ceramic tile grouts, white masonry paints and cement block fillers. It is obvious that these compounds are more convenient to use with the simple addition of water, than those compounds requiring the addition of a latex emulsion. As improvements are made in these dry powders, there will be more emphasis on this type of compound. At the present time, the dry powder acrylics are more costly than the latex emulsions on a dry solids basis. [Pg.95]

An absorbable polymeric modifier that is compatible with the chosen cyanoacrylate to achieve a moderate-to-high preuse viscosity for ease of application, and to increase the absorption rate and compliance of tile cured adhesive for minimizing residence time at the application site and maximizing mechanical biocompatibility — for this, highly absorbable liquid oxalate polymers, such as poly(triox-yethylene oxalate) (PTOEO) and amorphous or low-melting absorbable copolyesters such as those described in Chapter 3 — polyaxial copolyesters and other copolymers based on cyclic monomers — were selected. [Pg.63]
