Acrylic acid Coatings

Polyperfluorohexane-coated sulfur floats on ethylene glycol for hours, whereas sulfur samples coated with the other two polymers sink after minutes, especially acrylic-acid-coated sulfur. As the surface energy of sulfur after encapsulation with a plasma polymer is brought closer to those of the rubbers, better compatibility with these rubbers is to be expected. [Pg.192]

We modified a polyethersulfone membrane (PES) surface with a plasma-deposited acrylic acid coating (PES-pdAA) and RGD peptide covalently immobilized through a spacer arm molecule (SA), obtaining PES-pdAA-SA-RGD membranes. The same method was used to immobilize galadose in its acid form (Galadonic acid) to obtain the PES-PdAA-SA-GAL membranes. [Pg.436]

Plasma treatment of microchannels can be useful for improving the functionality of microdevices. For example, previous studies have shown that PDMS microchannels can be made hydrophilic by the addition of silane molecules with polar head groups [6]. In this process (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (3-MPS) was absorbed to PDMS to increase the hydrophilic properties of microchannels. Additionally, plasma polymerization has been used to induce in the long-term hydrophilic surface modification by covalently bonding a polymer layer to the surface. Barbier et al. [7] describe a method based on plasma polymerization modification with acrylic acid coatings. First, argon plasma pretreatment was used to activate trace oxygen molecules in the chamber, which partially oxidize the top layer of the substrate. This step cross-linked the surface to reduce ablation of silicon... [Pg.2788]

An example of plasma polymerization is acrylic acid coating of PDMS. The polymerized coatings yielded hydrophilic or patterned hydrophilic/ hydrophobic surfaces that were quite stable. These materials were useful in PDMS microchannels in lab-on-a-chip devices or in soft microlithography. Maleic anhydride has also been used in these polymerizations. Photons have also been used to modify surfaces. ... [Pg.125]

In contrast to the situation with high sohds coatings, acryhc resins are, in general, more appropriate than polyesters for water-reducible baking coatings. Acryhc copolymers using acryhc acid (2-propenoic acid) [79-10-7], (see Acrylic acid and derivatives) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate as... [Pg.338]

Extension of the chlorosulfonation technology to base resins other than polyethylene, where value can be added, seems a logical next step. Polypropylene and ethylene copolymers containing additional functionaUty, ie, maleic anhydride graft, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, etc, have been chlorinated and chlorosulfonated to broaden the appHcation base, particularly in coatings and adhesives (9,10). [Pg.490]

It is for this reason that the discovery by Ulrich was of significant importance to the successful development of acrylic PSAs. He found that by copolymerizing polar monomers, such as acrylic acid, one could greatly increase the cohesive strength of the polymer allowing PSA articles coated with this type of material to sustain a load without premature shear failure. These polar monomers commonly... [Pg.488]

An example of the contribution of polar interactions between an acrylic PSA and a substrate is shown in Fig. 6. By copolymerizing iso-octylacrylate and acrylic acid, using a monomer ratio of, respectively, 95/5 and 90/10, two otherwise identical PSAs were made. The PSAs were laminated to both sides of a foam core to make an attachment tape as used in the automotive industry for the application of body side moldings to a car. One side of the foam tape was laminated against an aluminum foil backing. The other side was laminated against an automotive paint-coated panel to make the final test sample. The test sample was allowed to... [Pg.489]

A modified latex composition contains a phosphorus surface group. Such a latex is formed by emulsion polymerization of unsaturated synthetic monomers in the presence of a phosponate or a phosphate which is intimately bound to the surface of the latex. Thus, a modified latex containing 46% solids was prepared by emulsion polymerization of butadiene, styrene, acrylic acid-styrene seed latex, and a phosphonate comonomer in H20 in the presence of phosphated alkylphenol ethoxylate at 90°C. The modified latex is useful as a coating for substrates and as a binder in aqueous systems containing inorganic fillers employed in paper coatings, carpet backings, and wallboards [119]. [Pg.602]

Other NAD microspheres are composed of styrene, MMA, hydroxyethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and acrylonitrile and are blended with acrylic copolymers and melamine/formaldehyde resins [341,342]. Particles of this polymer are used as rheology modifiers to prevent sagging in automotive coatings and for controlling the orientation of metal flake pigments. [Pg.220]

Relative humidity changes were measured with a nano-scale HRI-coated LPG in a wide range from 38.9% to 100% RH with a sensitivity of 0.2 nm/%RH, and an accuracy of 2.3% RH59. The material used was a hydro-gel layer composed by, among other chemicals, acrylic acid and vinyl pyridine. Fine adjust of the components proportion made possible to obtain a refractive index of the gel of about 1.55. The overlay thickness was estimated to be in that case 600 nm. [Pg.71]

Polyelectrolytes provide excellent stabilisation of colloidal dispersions when attached to particle surfaces as there is both a steric and electrostatic contribution, i.e. the particles are electrosterically stabilised. In addition the origin of the electrostatic interactions is displaced away from the particle surface and the origin of the van der Waals attraction, reinforcing the stability. Kaolinite stabilised by poly(acrylic acid) is a combination that would be typical of a paper-coating clay system. Acrylic acid or methacrylic acid is often copolymerised into the latex particles used in cement sytems giving particles which swell considerably in water. Figure 3.23 illustrates a viscosity curve for a copoly(styrene-... [Pg.96]

Control of fiber friction is essential to the processing of fibers, and it is sometimes desirable to modify fiber surfaces for particular end-uses. Most fiber friction modifications are accomplished by coating the fibers with lubricants or finishes. In most cases, these are temporary treatments that are removed in final processing steps before sale of the finished good. In some cases, a more permanent treatment is desired, and chemical reactions are performed to attach different species to the fiber surface, e.g. siliconized slick finishes or rubber adhesion promoters. Polyester s lack of chemical bonding sites can be modified by surface treatments that generate free radicals, such as with corrosive chemicals (e.g. acrylic acid) or by ionic bombardment with plasma treatments. The broken molecular bonds produce more polar sites, thus providing increased surface wettability and reactivity. [Pg.430]

A variety of phenol couplings have been described. Those reported before 1991 have been reviewed [66]. 2-Naphthol (27) was oxidized to l,l -binaphthol (28) in high current efficiency on a graphite felt electrode coated with a thin poly(acrylic acid) layer immobilizing 4-amino-2,2, 6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-l-oxy (4-amino-TEMPO) (Scheme 10) [67]. [Pg.180]
