In addition to printed compilations, more and more of the information is available on CD-ROM and latterly also on-line on the internet. This last is a feature of the service provided by MSI, Materials Science International Services in Stuttgart. This organisation, under the working name of MSIT Workplace (http //www.msiwp.com), provides information on the entire corpus of phase diagram compilations. [Pg.497]

The health and safety policy statement is your starting point to managing health and safety in the workplace. By law, (Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 section 2(3)) if you employ five or more people you must have a written health and safety policy. This contains your statement of general policy on health and safety at work and the organisation and arrangements for putting that policy into practice. [Pg.2]

Most companies have set in place procedures to meet the requirements of the international quality standard e.g. ISO 9001 or national equivalents, as discussed in Section B, 3.2.23. The requirement of these standards are that procedures are in place for all activities carried out in the workplace, that these procedures are recorded and that the activities are carried out, by staff, as described in the procedures. The operation of these procedures is subject to an external audit, to confirm that there is compliance in the day-to-day activities of a work group. It should be noted that having procedures written down does not necessarily mean that an organisation has the best procedures in place. They will need to be constantly monitored and modified in the light of experience. [Pg.131]

The Swedish Work Environment Authority (SWEA) and the Swedish Chemicals Inspectorate (SCI) are, thus, two enforcement authorities that work with environmental issues, though in different respects. The Swedish Work Environment Authority focuses on factors that have an impact on the mental, social and physical health and well-being of employees, while the Swedish Chemicals Inspectorate focuses on factors that influence toxic levels in nature and thereby both directly and indirectly the health and well-being of human beings as well. While SWEA s activity is dominated by inspections of workplaces in public and private organisations, inspections play only a minor role in the activities of SCI. See Table 18.1 for further differences between the authorities. [Pg.322]

Sheltered employment is permanent employment for persons who are receiving disability pension. A wage subsidy is given when persons are employed at ordinary workplaces according to this scheme. Sheltered employment may also be organised by the public sector, i.e. it takes place at special institutions where persons with mental disorders or handicaps are employed. [Pg.238]

It can be suggested that a consequence of this focus on Brand Zero has produced a depersonalisation of health and safety management. Within a project or organisational context, one individual alone is not able to prevent all accidents it requires shared practice if only because of the logistical and physical demands of the site. Yet under Brand Zero, this shared focus can be easily affected by others, and so responsibility for success resides within the shared workplace, which in turn can lead to individual disassociation with health and safety management at a personal level. Just one incident can therefore ruin the figures and potentially disenchant those who should still be focused on safety management in practice. [Pg.166]
