Working Centers

This book is mainly about my life in search of new chemistry. Because some of my work centered around the discovery of extremely strong superacids, which are sometimes also called magic acids, I chose the title A Life of... 

An additional impetus for pyrrole and indole research derives from the recognition of the physiological significance of these ring systems. In the case of pyrroles the early work centered around hemin from hemoglobin and the bile pigments. The structure of chlorophyll was also shown to be pyrrole-derived. The biosynthetic connection between simple pyrroles and the macrocyclic hemin and chlorin have remained of interest up to the present (75ACR201). 

Alan Allnatt s research interests at Western Ontario have been concerned with the statistical mechanics of the transport of matter through crystals. His earliest work centered on obtaining methods for calculating the equilibrium distributions and thermodynamic properties of the point defects (vacancies, interstitials, solutes) that make transport possible. Over the past ten years the role of various levels and types of dietary fat and dietary antioxidants in modifying chemically induced cancer has been actively investigated in this laboratory with most of the work centering on mammary cancer. 

Synthetic 02-carriers have been known for some forty years and have maintained considerable interest because of the role of such centers in some naturally occurring oxygen-storage and -transport systems (1-8). Much of the earlier work centered around a range of formally divalent Co complexes with N- and/or O-donor ligands (3, 9),... 

If you recall from the beginning of this chapter, some of the work that led to the development of the modem atomic theory was done by scientists Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Louis de Broglie, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, and Erwin Shrodinger. The first work centered around light (electromagnetic radiation), while the later work focused on the wave-like nature of matter. The AP test does not probe too deeply into the theoretical considerations of any of these scientists, but some calculations have popped up on previous tests. Therefore, let s turn our attention to some of the equations associated with these scientists work. 

Much of OSHA s early work centered around abating mechanical and electrical hazards in the workplace. Beginning with the Hazard Communication Standard in 1986, however, a larger emphasis was placed on eliminating chronic hazards associated with workers exposure to chemicals, including colorants.

His papers and those of his associates dealt with the photo protection of col-chine (155), dacarbazine (156), doxorubicin (157,158), dyes (159-162), metronidazole (163), nitroprusside (164,165), phenobarbital (166), physostigmine (167), reserpine (168), sulfathiazole (169), tetracycline (170) and vitamins (171-173). Most of his work centered upon the use of additives for the photoprotection of liquid drug products. 

Preliminary Experiments. Initial work centered on the study of the reaction of potassium with tetrahydrofuran and with naphthalene in tetrahydrofuran. 

For anion chromatography, and especially for non-suppressed IC, it is necessary to have resins of low exchange capacity. Earlier work centered on functionalization of macroporous resins produced by Rohm and Haas.

The order of reactivity agrees with previous studies—TMEDA being by far the most reactive of the readily available tertiary diamines. [Sparteine appears to be the most activating of the tertiary diamines investigated (I, 10)]. Recent reports by Langer and others indicate that increased activation is expected from the methyl tertiary polyamines containing more than two basic nitrogens, all separated by two carbons (II). Preparative and synthetic work centered on TMEDA and TED (DABCO) because of their economic practicality. 

Of the different classes of non-protein kinases, the development of inhibitors of lipid kinases has received by far the most attention. A majority of this work centers on inhibitors of phosphatidylinositol kinases, which reflects the important role that phosphatidylinositols play as second messengers. In this section, we review inhibitors of PI3K and related kinases, as well as inhibitors of other phosphatidyl inositol kinases. We also discuss sphingosine kinase inhibitors and we end this section with a brief summary of inhibitors of other lipid kinases. 

The next phase of the work centered on the action of sugar in various foods. Some of this has been reported elsewhere (3), but a few of the details are necessary in order to amplify the theme of this paper.
