So far, only the inventory of finished product has been considered. There are also inventories of raw materials and work in process, i.e., partially processed materials or intermediate produc ts, to be considered. It is necessaiy to modify Eqs. (9-147) through (9-154) accordingly to take these inventories into account. 

The result will be minimum work-in-process (WIP) through the elimination of queue time and a significant reduction in the cost of quality when compared to the more conventional approaches to manufacturing used in recent years. Scheduling of work in process engineering or design is a near impossibility as far as pin-point accuracy is concerned. The very developmental and planning nature of the early phases, as well as the continuous follow-through and follow-up, make this difficult. As a result, in the rest of this book we will focus on process synthesis approaches that are single-objective or decompose the original problem so as to become a single-objective problem. 

If a system is used for material control, the materials should be adequately described (raw materials, package components, work in process and/or finished products) along with the methodology for switching to back up manual control.

The safety of contractors who may be exposed to process hazards has become a great concern since the occurrence of very serious incidents at Pasadena, Texas (October 23, 1989), and Chan-nelview, Texas (July 5, 1990). Revision and modernization of the-text material from previous editions has been incorporated in a different sequence of presentation. It is assumed that the reader has a sufficient background in process calculations and technology, thermodynamics, unit operations and processes, and elementary engineering economics as taught in an undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum. The first six chapters of the present edition can then be used as a text for course work in process development where the ultimate goal is to arrive at a preliminary cost estimate.
