In the 1930s when high-pressure natural gas (95% methane) pipelines were being built in the United States, it was found that the lines often became plugged in cold weather by a white, waxy solid that contained both water and methane (CFIJ molecules. Twenty years later. Walter Claussen at the University of Illinois deduced Ihe structure of that solid, a hydrate of methane. Notice (Figure B) that CH4 molecules are trapped within a three-dimensional cage of H20 molecules.

Yellowish-white solid with a mild, sweetish odor. Odor threshold concentration is 287 ppm (quoted, Keith and Walters, 1992). 

White, crystalline solid when pure light tan color with faint chemical odor for technical grades. Odor threshold concentrations in air ranged from 18 to 41 ppb (quoted, Keith and Walters, 1992). Robeck et al. (1965) reported an odor threshold concentration of 9 ppb. 

White to gray, or pale yellowish-orange crystals or powder. Nonflammable but may be combustible if dissolved in a flammable organic solvent or petroleum distillate for application. Pungent to mild, fruity odor. Odor threshold concentration in water is 4.7 mg/kg (quoted, Keith and Walters,...

Cell Lines. The human fetal intestinal cell line (FHS) was kindly supplied to us by Dr. Walter A. Nelson-Rees at the Naval Bioscience Laboratory, Oakland, California. The human colonic cell line, SKCO-1 developed by Drs. G. Trempe and L.F. Olds, was obtained from Dr. Jorgen Fogh, Sloan Kettering Institute, Rye, New York. Over 70% of a lethal dose of eugenol was recovered from the urine of rabbits after death.
