White varnish

HOCH2C = CCH2OH. White solid, m.p. 58 C, b.p. 238- C prepared by the high pressure reaction between ethyne and methanol and also from BrMgCCMgBr and methanal. Used in electroplating (Ni), as a corrosion inhibitor, and in paint and varnish removal. [Pg.73]

CoAsS, are also used as sources. The ore is roasted and Co is precipitated as the hydroxide and then reduced to Co with carbon (hep below 417 - C, cep to m.p.). The metal is silvery white and readily polished. It dissolves in dilute acids and is slowly oxidized in air. Adsorbs hydrogen strongly. The main use of cobalt is in alloys. Various other soft materials without the layer—lattice stmcture are used as soHd lubricants (58), eg, basic white lead or lead carbonate [598-63-0] used in thread compounds, lime [1305-78-8] as a carrier in wire drawing, talc [14807-96-6] and bentonite [1302-78-9] as fillers for grease for cable pulling, and zinc oxide [1314-13-2] in high load capacity greases. Graphite fluoride is effective as a thin-film lubricant up to 400°C and is especially useful with a suitable binder such as polyimide varnish (59). Tetrahydronaphthalene [119-64-2] (Tetralin) is a water-white Hquid that is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in methyl alcohol, and completely soluble in other monohydric alcohols, ethyl ether, and most other organic solvents. It is a powerhil solvent for oils, resins, waxes, mbber, asphalt, and aromatic hydrocarbons, eg, naphthalene and anthracene. Its high flash point and low vapor pressure make it usehil in the manufacture of paints, lacquers, and varnishes for cleaning printing ink from rollers and type in the manufacture of shoe creams and floor waxes as a solvent in the textile industry and for the removal of naphthalene deposits in gas-distribution systems (25). The commercial product typically has a tetrahydronaphthalene content of >97 wt%, with some decahydronaphthalene and naphthalene as the principal impurities. [Pg.483]

Cobalt. Without a doubt cobalt 2-ethyIhexanoate [136-52-7] is the most important and most widely used drying metal soap. Cobalt is primarily an oxidation catalyst and as such acts as a surface or top drier. Cobalt is a transition metal which can exist in two valence states. Although it has a red-violet color, when used at the proper concentration it contributes very Httie color to clear varnishes or white pigmented systems. Used alone, it may have a tendency to cause surface wrinkling therefore, to provide uniform drying, cobalt is generally used in combination with other metals, such as manganese, zirconium, lead, calcium, and combinations of these metals. [Pg.221]

Cerium/Rare Earth. Cerium 2-ethyIhexanoate [56797-01-4] and rare-earth driers promote polymerization and through dry. Like iron they are active at elevated temperature and, since they do not contribute to film discoloration, are recommended for white bake finishes and overprint varnishes where color is critical. Rare earths also find use at the other end of the temperature spectmm in coatings dried at low temperature and high humidity. [Pg.221]

The resins are substances derived mostly from vegetable sources some have been used as binders in the preparation of paints and varnishes, others as incense burned in ritual ceremonies, and a few, such as amber, have been used on their own, as semiprecious stones.
