Pigments, white

Talc. Talc (qv) [14807-96-6] (Cl Pigment White 26, Cl No. 77019), is finely powdered, native, hydrous magnesium sihcate, 3MgO 4Si02 H20 (soapstone) sometimes containing a small amount of aluminum siUcate. It is produced ia many parts of the world, including France, Italy, India, and the United States. [Pg.452]

Zinc oxide [1314-13-2] (mol wt 81.37 Cl Pigment White 4, Cl No. 77947) is a white or yellowish white amorphous, odorless powder with pH 6.95—7.37. It is practically iasoluble in water but soluble in dilute acetic acid, mineral acids, ammonia, ammonium carbonate, and alkaU hydroxides. [Pg.452]

Bismuth oxychloride [7787-59-9]—Cl Pigment White 14, Cl No. 77163. A synthetically prepared white or nearly white amorphous or finely crystalline, odorless powder consisting principally of BiOCl. Bismuth oxychloride is synthetic pearl essence. It is used in Upstick, nail poHsh, eye makeup, and other cosmetics to produce a lustrous, pearly effect. [Pg.452]

Calcium carbonate [471-34-1]—Cl Pigment White 18, Cl No. 77220, EEC No. E 170. A fine, white, synthetically prepared powder consisting essentially of precipitated calcium carbonate, CaCO. ... [Pg.452]

Mica [12001 -26-2]—Cl Pigment White 20, Cl No. 77019. A white powder obtained from the naturally occurring mineral muscovite mica, consisting predominantly of a potassium aluminum siHcate, [1327-44-2] H2KAl2(Si0 2- Mica may be identified and semiquantitatively determined by its characteristic x-ray diffraction pattern and by its optical properties. [Pg.453]

Pigment/Binder Ratio the ratio of total pigment (white and/or coloured pigment plus extender) to binder (q. v.) in a paint preferably expressed as a ratio by volume. [Pg.683]

Pigments are classified by an internationally recognised convention, published in the International Colour Index by the Society of Dyers and Colourists in Bradford, in association with the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. The Index issues a generic name to chemically identical products (e.g., titanium dioxide is classified as C.I. Pigment White 6). Where structures are known, pigments are also given a constitution number (e.g., titanium dioxide has the constitution number Cl 77891).This number is reserved for the essential colorant, other ingredients, such as the carriers used in a masterbatch, do not affect this classification. [Pg.18]

Carter Also known as H.T.S. Carter. A proces for making basic lead carbonate pigment (white lead). Lead monoxide, in a slowly revolving drum, is moistened and sprayed with acetic acid. Carbon dioxide is then introduced. Carbonation is subsequently completed in a separate vessel. See also Dutch, Thompson-Stewart. [Pg.51]

Dutch An obsolete process for making basic lead carbonate pigment (white lead) by exposing metallic lead to vinegar and carbon dioxide. Reportedly first described by Theophrastos around 300 BC. Also known as the Stack process because the metal ingots were arranged in vertical stacks. See also Thompson-Stewart. [Pg.94]

White pigments, some of rather variable composition, that have been used in the past include white lead (Cl Pigment White 1), refractive index 1.9 zinc oxide (Cl Pigment White 4), r.i. 1.9 lithopone (Cl Pigment White 5), r.i. 1.84 zinc sulphide (Cl Pigment White 7), r.i. 2.3 antimony oxide (Cl Pigment White 11), r.i. 2.2. All have been eclipsed by titanium dioxide (Cl Pigment White 6). [Pg.76]

Zinc oxide [1314-33-2], ZnO, Mr 81.38, was formerly used only as a white pigment, and was named zinc white (C.I. Pigment White 4), Chinese white, or flowers of zinc. The term zinc white now denotes zinc oxide produced by the combustion of zinc metal according to the indirect or French process. [Pg.77]

Ti02-mica pigments are used in all color formulations of conventional pigments where brilliance and luster are required in addition to color, i.e., in plastics, coatings, printing, and cosmetics. A major market for silver white pigments (pearl pigments, white metallic ) is the plastics industry. [Pg.220]

The technical tests required for cinnabar and vermilion are more particularly those of the quality and intensity of the colour, the covering power, fineness, stability towards light and behaviour towards other pigments (white lead, zinc white) these are carried out by the general methods already indicated. The chemical analysis comprises principally the tests and determinations here described. [Pg.386]
