WHEEL RIM

FIG. 2 is a side plan view of one embodiment of the wheel cover of the present invention shown in FIG. 1 with the wheel cover applied to a spoke wheel rim. [Pg.28]

The bead is usually wound hoop of high strength monofilament steel wire coated with mbber, providing the tire with a secure fitment to the wheel rim such that it does not move or dislodge as the vehicle undergoes severe maneuvers. [Pg.449]

A shaped strip of mbber fitted between the beads of certain pneumatic tyre assemblies to protect the inner tube from damage by the beads and the wheel rim. [Pg.28]

Applied to a pneumatic tyre with no separate inner tube. An air-impermeable lining, usually of a halogenated butyl, is applied to the inside of the casing. The bead construction is such as to ensure an airtight lit on the wheel rim. Inflation is done through a valve fitted directly into a valve hole in the rim. [Pg.67]

The relationship of the wheel-rim-type structure of 62 to the metal can be demonstrated by a 30° rotation of the two centered Alg rings followed by a shift of the six rings towards each other (cf. Figure 2.3-13) [92], The other possibility of the formation of an Al14 polyhedron with point symmetry by displacement of the two naked central atoms in the direction of a polyhedral entity has been shown to be energetically unfavorable by quantum chemical calculations i.e., the observed metalloid structure (Figure 2.3-13) is favored over the anticipated polyhedral structure as described by Wade-Mingos [5, 96] (see Chapter 1.1.2). [Pg.146]

The rubber stock, once compounded and mixed, must be molded or transformed into the form of one of the final parts of the tire. This consists of several parallel processes by which the sheeted rubber and other raw materials, such as cord and fabric, are made into the following basic tire components tire beads, tire treads, tire cords, and the tire belts (fabric). Tire beads are coated wires inserted in the pneumatic tire at the point where the tire meets the wheel rim (on which it is mounted) they ensure a seal between the rim and the tire. The tire treads are the part of the tire that meets the road surface their design and composition depend on the use of the tire. Tire cords are woven synthetic fabrics (rayon, nylon, polyester) impregnated with rubber they are the body of the tire and supply it with most of its strength. Tire belts stabilize the tires and prevent the lateral scrubbing or wiping action that causes tread wear. [Pg.548]

Design of railway wheels were indeed challenging as they ran on rails. In the beginning of nineteenth century, rack-type tracks were developed on which a toothed wheel moved. However, it was difficult to use toothed wheels on rails. It took considerable efforts and experiments in the design of wheels for rails to realize that smooth rails in contact with the wheel rim could give sufficient friction to run the trains. Two types of wheel-rail combinations were initially used—flanged type... [Pg.31]

Wire finds application in tire reinforcement in tire belts, heavy-duty tire plies (e.g., in large truck tires), beads, and chippers (which protect the bead from wheel rim damage). [Pg.674]

The metal-bonded grinding wheel is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply with a smooth brush contact, whereas the fixed electrode is connected to the negative pole. The electrode is made from copper that has one-sixth of the wheel peripheral length and a width of 2 mm wider than the wheel rim thickness. The gap between the wheel and the active surface of the electrode is 0.1-0.3 mm and can be adjusted by mechanical... [Pg.206]

A carbon fiber bicycle wheel rim is fabricated by Sun Rims saving 400 g over an A1 rim and with 30% less carbon than that achieved by competitors using carbon fiber braid. A core of foam is rolled into a circle to fit the mold rim periphery and a braid sleeve drawn over the core with the ends overlapped. Extra pieces of carbon fiber prepreg are positioned at high stress points, the reinforcement is impregnated with epoxy resin and the lay-up is then compression molded. The pressures are sufficient for the overlap joint to be uniformly incorporated into the rim thickness. [Pg.1001]

We have attempted to minimize vehicle mass by using stiff honeycomb composites for the solar panels and chassis and custom-designed wheel rims and hubs. The enabling technologies and cost-design trade-offs and an estimate of the costs of parts and the mass for the prototype robot are highlighted below. [Pg.14]
