Sulphur dioxide. Sulphur dioxide is avail-able in the liquid form in heavy glass cylinders the gas is obtained by simply turning the metal valve.

Injection moulding The injection moulder is a machine which first melts a thermoplastic and then injects that molten polymer into a mould. Such items as baskets, bowls, bins, telephones and electronic housings are produced by this technique. It can be used for lining valves. In this case the valve would be used as part of the mould. Very thick coatings are produced which give chemical resistance to the valve. At the same time, the metal valve housing will protect the valve from mechanical damage. 

The engineering firm insisted on heavily plated metal valves for DI water. They had never used plastic, which the laboratory operator had successfully employed in a previous installation. Management agreed with the engineers. The water was distributed to all sinks by standard PVC pipe, which worked very well after thorough flushing. 

The cell is made up of one glass tube and three metal valves. The valves are open when they are in vertical position and are closed when in the horizontal position and allow maximum flow at the 45 position. When the three valves are closed, the liquid automatically flows into the solution compartment of the cell when the right-hand valve (solvent-inlet valve) is open, the liquid will be directed from the solution in-let tube into the solvent compartment of the cell by passing the solution compartment. The left hand valve is the solvent drain valve, and the near valve, the solution-drain valve. 

Materials 1,3-Dioxolane (1) and 1,3-dioxepane (5) were prepared and purified conventionally. Compound 1 contained no impurities detectable by GLC, but 5 contained a trace of tetrahydrofuran (THF) which could not be removed even by distillation on a Fenske column with a reflux ratio of 50 1 4-methyl-l,3-dioxolane (4) was prepared by Astle s method [10]. All monomers were dried preliminarily by storage over LiAlH4 in reservoirs attached to a conventional high-vacuum line fitted only with all-metal valves, and then stored with liquid Na-K alloy until used. Methylene dichloride was purified conventionally, distilled on a Normatron 1.5 m column, dried i.vac. over LiAlH4 on a conventional high-vacuum line, and then stored for 24 h over a fresh sodium film immediately before use, in a reservoir attached to the vacuum line. 

Antimony pentafluoride (4.94 g, 22.8 mmole) is added, in a good dry box, to side B of the reaction flask using an all-glass syringe. Elemental mercury (2.74 g, 13.7 mmole) is added to side A. The reaction vessel is fitted at E and F with Nupro or similar metal valves, removed from the dry box, and attached to a vacuum line that has been thoroughly flamed before use. Approximately 10 mL of sulfur dioxide is transferred to side B by cooling with liquid N2, and the... 

In a typical experiment the metal vacuum line and connections to the hexafluoride and HF storage tubes are pumped to at least KT4 torr over several hours. A 30-mL Kel-F reaction tube9 fitted with a metal valve closure is charged with silicon powder and a Teflon-covered stirring bar. The reaction tube is attached to the vacuum system and evacuated. 

Within the working part of the vacuum system the use of all-metal valves is not common indeed, since the advent of PTFE taps there are few occasions when such taps are necessary. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to note that suitable taps do exist for operations involving materials incompatible with both PTFE and grease, or if a good static vacuum (see Section 2.3.1) is required for a long time in circumstances where a glass tap would be inappropriate. 

They require a lot of space because of the need for glass-to-metal seals (Housekeeper seals) on each side of the tap and even more if small spirals are included. The purpose of these spirals is to absorb any movement which occurs as the tap is manipulated. This is particularly worthwhile for metal valves which often require more force to turn. 

Nevertheless, metal valves tend to be more reliable and robust than PTFE or glass taps and therefore last longer, and they are to be recommended when frequent use of a very corrosive material is expected. 

A simple all-metal valve built on the same principle, whose seal can be regenerated without dismantling, is also described in Section 2.4, as it has only been published in a thesis (Krummenacher, 1971).

Unfortunately, a lot of the operational objectives for the POSRV described above could not be achieved as economically as with a spring valve the use of soft seats was imperative to obtain all advantages, which limits the use of most POSRVs in high temperatures (typically up to 300°C maximum). There are now POSRVs in the market with metal-to-metal seats, but here tightness, especially after a few operations, decreases much more than with resilient-seated valves and even traditional spring-operated metal-to-metal valves. 

Some mechanical tests on spring valves are not always accurate some systems can be satisfactory but remain rather cumbersome and expensive, as explained in Section 10.4. They require a very accurate knowledge of the system pressure, the nozzle area, spring compression, and so on. During some tests, the valve always opens, which is not recommended as it can damage the nozzle and disc in case of a metal-to-metal valve. It is also very time-consuming. 

A balanced bellows metal-to-metal valve spare part kit ... 

Conclusion The difference in purchasing price between a pilot valve and a balanced bellows metal-to-metal valve is already compensated after the first maintenance cycle of these valves. This is an ROI of less than 1 year if the attached recommended maintenance frequency is followed.
