Infrared detectors can be made with several layer AR coatings, and the detectors for the James Webb Space Telescope, awarded to Rockwell Scientific, specify 4- or 5-layer coatings to achieve QE of 95% over a broad bandpass. [Pg.138]

Primary fundings for these investigations were provided by the American Water Works Research Foundation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Division of Environmental and Biomedical Research. The co-operation and advice of James S. Fritz, Harry J. Svec, Ron Webb, O. Thomas Love, Michael Taras and the various representatives of the fourteen water utilities are gratefully acknowledged. [Pg.98]

The historical situation of the Esoteric Tradition visibly infected all levels of Occidental modernism. The late James Webb (1946-1980) was the most accomplished historian of the Esoteric Tradition and the author of a monumental study collectively called The Age of the Irrational. As he repeatedly emphasized. Occultism has always been of particular interest to the modern artist. Arising from his sense of bohemian and/or avant-garde alienation, the eventual result, stated Webb, was for the artist to take on the more positive stance of the elect race. As Webb further recognized, this haughty pose is a functional parallel to the perennial need among Occultists to appear especially alert. Webb concluded. [Pg.20]

Current plans call for decommissioning of the HSTin 2010, a year before it is scheduled to be replaced by NASA s new James Webb Space Telescope. In order to keep the HSTin the best possible condition, anywhere from one to three maintenance trips are planned, probably to be carried out by a space shuttle. A number of astronomers are arguing for keeping the HST in orbit beyond 2010, however. They point to the instrument s numerous accomplishments and suggest that it still has much to contribute to the advancement of astronomical knowledge. [Pg.109]

Great scientific discoveries and important scientific expeditions are usually thought of, planned, and carried out by scientists, but major projects that involve the investment of billions of dollars of public money are often administered and managed by individuals who have little or no background in science and technology itself. The efforts of such individuals are often responsible for the ultimate success (orfailure) of research projects. One of the best examples of this truism is James E. Webb, second administrator of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). [Pg.165]

James Webb was born in Tally Ho, North Carolina, on October 7,1906. He attended the University of North Carolina, from which he received his A.B. in education in 1928. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a pilot from 1930 to 1932. After leaving the service, he entered the George Washington University School of Law and earned his L.L.B. in 1936 and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar. [Pg.165]

An attribute of cfrp is its low thermal expansion and combined with structural rigidity, a graphite/epoxy composite was selected for the main structure of the Hubble Telescope [86]. The successor to the Hubble will be the James Webb Space Telescope, with backing struts and mirror support struts made from a carbon hybrid composite to operate at temperatures in the region of —235°C. [Pg.983]

Laser interferometers will be used to measure the optical quality of the mirror used in the James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled to launch in 2014. The surface smoothness must be unprecedented If the mirror were scaled up to a size of 3,000 miles across, the surface height would be allowed to vary only by a foot at most. [Pg.1115]
