Accelerated Tests. Weather resistance in an accelerated test is defined as the resistance of plastics towards changes caused by simulated open-air weathering (simulation of global radiation by means of filtered xenon arc radiation and periodic rain). After the weathering (measured by the product of intensity and duration), defined properties of the test sample are compared with those of an identical unweathered sample. Properties should be considered which are of practical importance, such as color or surface properties. For standards, see Table 1 ( Weathering in apparatus ). Three different commercial formulations of silicone sealants from Dow Corning was used in the NSF sponsored studies. They were DC-790, DC-995, and DC-983, in the order of increasing modulus. Dumbbell test coupons (samples) were prepared as per the ASTM standards. Some test coupons were maintained at ambient conditions as control and the rest were subjected to simulated weathering. An appraisal of artificial weathering methods was given in a report by Hoey and Hipwood who described the effectiveness of various weatherometer tests such as are described in BS 3900 Part F3 and ASTM 42 1964 (now ASTM G23 1989). The results from this study support what has been dealt with throughout the text and especially focused on in Chapter 5 the concept s ability to predict wastewater quality changes in a sewer.
