If there is water to be settled and withdrawn from hydrocarbon, the water s settling time requirement needs to be checked. If you watch a glass of muddy water, you will see particles in the water settling out. This is a heterogeneous mixture where the particles are large (in excess of 1000 nm), and it is called a suspension. In contrast, dissolving sodium chloride in water results in a true homogeneous solution, with solute particles less than 1 nm in diameter. For cross country lines containing oil or gas, the corrosive constituents such as water, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide are usually reduced to a very low level before the fluid enters the line. Sometimes internal water settling is provided however, external settlers may be needed because the required settling time is often several minutes. The internal liquid water will be corrosive tower and tray metallurgy must be corrosion-resistant when liquid water is present. [Pg.2057]
