Water-sealing construction materials

When weak chlorine is handled, as in the evacuation or purging of low-pressure pipelines, an acid seal would quickly be diluted by absorption of water from wet air. In this case, water-sealed compressors are used. Ferrous-metal construction is out of the question for this application. The materials must be suitable for use in wet chlorine service. Titanium and steel lined with titanium or a ceramic are frequently used. [Pg.926]

Construction Materials. Superabsorbent polsrmers are used to control liquid water in a variety of construction-related products. Joint-sealing composites are made by blending superabsorbents into chloroprene rubber (54) or into poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (55). These composites are used like mortar in the concrete block walls of the structure. Gaps left during construction are subsequently filled as the superabsorbent swells in any water, and subsequent leaks are prevented. A water-blocking construction backfill has also been developed from cement, water absorbing polymer, and an asphalt emulsion (56). [Pg.8035]

Superabsorbent polymer can be used as a water-blocking construction filler with cement and asphalt emulsion (155). The main benefit of the fill material is its high ductility compared to conventional construction backfills such as gravel or sand. These fillers can be delivered in low viscosity, which aids in the complete filling of the space. Similar principles are employed in making and using sealing compounds for electrical and optical cables. [Pg.622]

Experiments with excised plant parts are usually done in closed petri dishes or coated paper containers with clear plastic lids. The containers are lined with moist filter paper to keep plant tissue from dehydrating. When possible, leaves should be placed in water reservoirs. Leaves of many herbaceous plant species can be maintained in convenient capped water reservoirs used by florists to maintain corsages (e.g., Aqua-Pics ), but leaf terminals of woody trees may require water reservoirs constructed from large test tubes and sealed with cork or rubber stoppers, cotton batting and parafilm, or similar materials. [Pg.253]

The theoretical maximum suction lift at sea level for water (14.7 psi) (2.31 fi/psi) = 34 ft. However, due to flow resistance, this value is never attainable. For safety, 15 feet is considered the practical limit, although some pumps will lift somewhat higher columns of water. WTen sealing a vacuum condition above a pump, or the pump pumps from a vessel, a seal allowance to atmosphere is almost always taken as 34 feet of water. High suction lift causes a reduction in pump capacity, noisy operation due to release of air and vapor bubbles, vibration and erosion, or pitting (cavitation) of the impeller and some parts of the casing. (The extent of the damage depends on the materials of construction.)... [Pg.187]

Another method of preventing acid mine drainage is to construct barriers around the mine itself. The most important single source of AMD are abandoned coal mines. In some cases, the entrances to those mines can be sealed or barriers can be constructed to prevent the outflow of acidic water from the mines into lakes and streams. Finally, abandoned mines can sometimes simply be filled with sand, gravel, fly ash, or other materials, effectively immobilizing any potential acid-producing substances remaining within them. [Pg.125]
