Water-reducible resins

The Initial phase of the development was the determination of the relative solubility of the selected pheromone, ZZ and ZE-7, 11-hexadecadlenyl acetate (Gossyplure, 1 1 ratio). In a suitable polymer matrix. Four different water-soluble or water-reducible resins were Initially Investigated a water-soluble acrylic mixture, two latex emulsions and a natural rubber colloid. Intrln- sic solubility was determined by making resln/pheromone solutions of varying concentrations and measuring the rate of pheromone diffusion from dried films. In this manner, we were able to determine the most suitable base polymer from which to begin. [Pg.154]

Water-reducible resins Water-soluble types or lattices or emulsions. Resins which can be diluted (reduced) with water, water-cosolvent mixtures and sometimes with al-kah (alkah-soluble resins). Epoxy esters can also be made water-reducible by reacting maleic anhydride (2,5-furandione) [108-31-6] with epoxy esters prepared from dehydrated castor oil fatty acids. Addition of a tertiary amine opens the anhydride to give amine salts. Like other water-reducible resins, these resins are not soluble in water, but form a dispersion of resin aggregates swollen with water and solvent in an aqueous continuous phase. They are used in baking primers and primer-surfacers. [Pg.1441]

One approach to solving these problems is to combine conventional polyisocyanates with conventional, amine neutralized, water-reducible resins in a water-miscible solvent and then add water. A similar process is used for water-reducible coatings cross-linked with MF resins. Conventional water-reducible acrylic resins in solvents such as l-methoxy-2-propanol acetate have been used. This is an example of preparing a water reducible resin using an emulsion polymerisation technique. In the next section, the preparation of water reducible resins using a solution polymerisation technique is considered. [Pg.140]

The alternative route of preparing water reducible resins using emulsion polymerisation of an acid functional acrylic resin has already been considered under emulsion example 7 - preparation of a water soluble acrylic copolymer. [Pg.142]

The majority of water reducible resins prepared by the solution route are for thermoset applications if they are to be used as the principle film forming resin. As such hydroxyl functionality is normally incorporated if the resin contains acid functionality for neutralisation, which is normal. Typically, the hydroxyl value would be of a similar value to the acid value, i.e. 50 - 100 mg KOH/g. Note that there are two methods of quoting acid and hydroxyl values for vinyl and acrylic solution resins. Values can be quoted... [Pg.142]

Some straightforward examples of preparing water reducible resins follows, due to the similarity with solution polymerisation, comments will only be made where appropriate. [Pg.143]

In between insoluble and soluble waterborne systems are dispersions of water reducible resins. These are insoluble resins with sufficient acid or amine functionality so that when neutralised (either fully or partially) the resin can be dispersed in water and remain as a stable dispersion. Many people consider emulsions to be dispersions. So they are. As a general rule, the term dispersion will refer to solubilised dispersed systems. Emulsion will be used to refer to insoluble particles dispersed in water with, in most cases, monomers having been polymerised in the water. Emulsions are sometimes referred to as latices. [Pg.352]

Emulsion polymerisation is normally undertaken by the resin manufacturer. Inversion can be undertaken in house . Acid (or amine) rich resins can be purchased and subsequently inverted by the formulator. Some people refer to these inverted dispersions as water reducible resins. [Pg.362]
