Sulphur Thiocyanate, S(SCN)2, is formed as colourless, pearly crystals, when a solution of thiocyanogen in ether reacts with dry hydrogen sulphide. It decomposes at atmospheric temperatures. Heated in an open tube on a water-bath it darkens rapidly and then suddenly decomposes, evolving orange fumes. A solution of sulphur thiocyanate in a mixture of ether and benzene does not react with powdered iron, but on the addition of a drop of water the characteristic red colour of ferric thiocyanate develops immediately. All of the papermaking properties showed deterioration as a result of the exposure to the temperatures of the kraft cycle. The tensile strength was reduced by 20%, the burst properties declined by 30%, and the tear properties, by approximately 45%. The solubilities of pure substances are generally different in a solvent. For example, some substances are soluble in water, and others are not. It can be said that the solubility of a substance in water is characteristic under given conditions. The separation of a copper (11) chloride-sulfur mixture (shown Figure 8) can be achieved by using the solubility differences of the components in water. When this mixture (8a) is placed in water, copper (11) chloride will dissolve. Whereas, the sulfur will not (8b). If this mixture is filtered, the sulfur particles will be removed through a filter paper (8c). In laboratory conditions hydrolysis usually is carried out as follows a solution of FeClj is added drop by drop to distilled water heated to boiling, stirring constantly. The whole liquid quickly takes on the red-brown color characteristic of hydrous ferric oxide, but remains transparent. If the solution is allowed to cool, the color fades somewhat, as some of the Fe(OH)3 changes back into FeCl3. To prevent the reverse reaction, the solution is boiled for a few minutes to remove HCl with water vapor, or it is removed by dialysis.
