Warnings in Advance

The advantage of the safety profession is that it is the only profession in the world that gives warnings of imminent danger. What is meant by this, according to Bird and Germain (1996), is that there are 600 warnings before a serious injury occurs. [Pg.67]

It should be emphasized that the only difference between a near miss incident and a hit (exchange of energy) is luck. Numerous writers have come to the same conclusion. These include Bird and Germain (1966), H. W. Heinrich (1931), W. E. Tarrants (1980), Petersen (1997), and others. Yet, the safety profession seems to ignore this valuable information. Safety can only be successful if near miss incidents are viewed as the true safety in the shadows, and are identified, reported, and acted upon. [Pg.67]

If an organization has a low injury rate, one must ask the question, Is it as a result of control or is it as a result of relying on luck If it is as a result of relying on luck, then the safety management systan needs to be reviewed. [Pg.67]

The luck factor is so prominent in safety and yet so poorly understood. Even working a million man-hours without a disabling injury could be as a result of luck. Not having a fatality for the past 50 years could be as a result of luck. Having a fatality once a year could be bad luck. The point is, unless the risk reduction controls are in place, we are relying on luck, not control, in the form of risk reduction. An organization must make sure that it has at least 70 elements that constitute [Pg.67]

Advancement of knowledge in the kaleidoscopic environment of esoteric philosophy and mysteries is perilous. The cardinal rule is that evidence must always exist for any hypothesis. The main purpose of this book is to assemble and cross-vector arcane knowledge in a new way, to underpin a new and better understanding of the subject. As in a court of law, some evidence is more reliable than other evidence. The author will attempt to warn in advance of the more contentious areas. [Pg.4]

In fact it proceeded on schedule while Bohr worked his way through the Swedish bureaucracy, but fell far short of success. The Danes, warned in advance, had spontaneously hidden their Jewish fellow citizens away. Only some 284 elderly rest-home residents had been seized. The more than seven thousand Jews remaining in Denmark were temporarily safe. But few of them planned at first to leave the country it was far from certain that Sweden would accept them and there seemed nowhere else to go. [Pg.483]

They sat at adjoining tables in a Pentagon dining room. They were a civilian committee separate conversations converged on the same question, only briefly mentioned during the morning and not taken up was there no way to let this cup pass from them Must Little Boy be dropped on the Japanese in surprise Could their stubborn enemy not be warned in advance or a demonstration arranged ... [Pg.647]

First, he had to ensure that the prison party actually reached the fortress without mishap. He warned Adjutant Grilloni that although San Leo was only some thirty miles away, it would be the most testing passage of their journey. The terrain was precipitous and vulnerable to ambush. With this in mind, Doria had already dispatched a trusted relative to scout in advance for signs of danger and to alert the garrison to prepare for their arrival. [Pg.220]

Formulas that actively and intensively remove phlegm, especially invisible phlegm, may cause unpleasant feelings and sensations at first because they provoke the movement of phlegm in the body. The practitioner should warn the patient about this in advance. [Pg.28]

Advance warning systems and the use of evacuation from areas of danger save lives and should be included in community disaster response plans whenever appropriate. Warnings can now be made months in advance, in the case of El Nino, to seconds in advance of the arrival of earthquake waves at some distance from the earthquake. Computers are being programmed to respond to warnings automatically, shutting down... [Pg.9]

Health systems researchers and public health experts need to address the requirement for rapid assessments of health care infrastructure that quickly identifies the status of the critical assets for providing care (facilities, medical supplies, and the workforce) during a disaster. Natural disasters are not predictable and there are rarely more than a few days warning of an impending event. Time does not allow for testing and retesting of tools or analysis of definitions and measures, and therefore they must be established in advance. Because needs assessments should be done as rapidly as possible it leaves little time for refining the processes. Further, the uniqueness of each disaster complicates research because of the variable populations, socioeconomic status, health care availability, and environmental conditions in every community. [Pg.564]

The instructor should purchase the windshield washer fluid to be used and then, in advance, carefully measure its specific gravity as will the students. This value can be used as the desirable value in the control chart. The warning limits can be set at 0.002 and the action limits at 0.003 and the students told that the resulting control chart is what the fluids company has been using. The students then create a control chart, chart their data, and interpret the results. [Pg.218]

The Soviet secret service revealed in advance Hitler s intention to use the poison gases on the Eastern Front in 1942. This most important dispatch was delivered to Moscow from Berlin in the spring of 1942. At that time the Soviet Union warned Germany through diplomatic channels in one of the neutral countries that it would undertake adequate steps in response. This information also reached the coalition Allies. On June 5, 1942, President Roosevelt warned Hitler on behalf of the United States and Great Britain that in the case of chemical warfare against either of the anti-Hitler coalition countries, these countries would act the same way. Fortunately, mankind escaped large-scale chemical warfare at that time. [Pg.67]

Being mentally alert - a situation soon to get out of hand may or may not manifest itself in advance via warning signs. Think what you might be missing. What is the worst case scenario ... [Pg.325]

Description The defensive driver tries to recognize potentially hazardous situations sufficiently in advance to allow time to safely maneuver past them. The defensive driver assmnes that other drivers may make mistakes and is on guard in the event an error is made. The defensive driver searches ahead of what is immediately in fi ont, to have advance warning of approaching hazards. [Pg.1115]
