Approximately 10 42 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1997, an explosion occurred in a resins production unit at Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. These disorders should concern all physicians and mental health professionals for several reasons. First, mood disorders are very common and will be encountered on a daily basis in most clinical settings (see Table 3.1). Second, they disrupt life in numerous ways. During an episode of depression or mania, sleep patterns change, appetite and eating are affected, family life is disrupted, work efficiency suffers, substance abuse rates soar, and physical illness is exacerbated. There are several other professions in which chemistry plays a role astronauts, biologists, construction workers, dentists, electricians, farmers to name but a few, and many others are somehow confronted with chemical processes or chemical products as part of their job. Provisions vary for vocational rehabilitation. Some states require the employer to pay for vocational rehabilitation. Some laws have maximmn payments, limit the period allowed for training or limit total expenses per case. Under the Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Act, states receive federal funds to help cover the cost of retraining persons disabled in industrial accidents. 

A wide range of specialists and professionals work with workers compensation cases. There are administrators, adjudicators, physicians, safety and health professionals, occupational and vocational therapists, attorneys, actuaries, risk managers, financial specialists, human resource specialists, legislators, and others. 

The pharmacist is responsible for ensuring that the professionals or workers to whom practical work is delegated are indeed capable of performing those tasks. In some countries specialised educational programs are available on a national specified level. So, vocational education allows pharmaceutical assistants or technicians to work as trusted professionals in any pharmacy. They can have a high level of independence and of responsibility for carrying out the tasks that are given to them. The pharmacist always retains the overall responsibility. 

Computer-graphics specialists can work in the public or private sector they can also work independently. Although companies prefer to hire candidates with a bachelor s degree, many workers in the field have only an associate s degree or vocational certificate. 

Construction of heat exchangers is executed by companies lai e and small. The work is carried out by skilled craftsmen using precise machine tools and other equipment. The Eederal Employees Compensation Act (FECA), 5 U.S.C. 8101 etseq., establishes a comprehensive and exclusive workers compensation program which pays compensation for the disability or death of a federal employee resulting from personal injury sustained while in the petformance of duty. The FECA, administered by OWCP, provides benefits for wage loss compensation for total or partial disability, schedule awards for permanent loss or loss of use of specified members of the body, related medical costs, and vocational rehabilitation. 

Rehabilitation hospitals admit VAIs who require therapy before reentering the community. They must be able to participate in three hours or more of physical therapy per day. Most admissions are from acute care hospitals (85%), and the mean length of stay is approximately 30 days. Many patients (20%) are discharged to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) (30). Patients participate actively, with minimum restrictions and maximum therapy by the multidisciplinary team that often includes physical, occupational, and respiratory therapist, prosthetist-orthotist, rehabilitation nurse, speech pathologist, psychologist, social worker, and vocational counselor (31).
