Patient participation

A patient must have motivation (having the desire or seeing the need) to learn. Motivation depends on the patient s perception of the need to learn. Education concerning the disease process may be necessary for the patient to become motivated to learn. Encouraging patient participation in planning realistic and attainable goals also promotes motivation. If the patient has no motivation, he or she is likely to be noncompliant. 

The design of phase II trials is influenced by the phase I results. Phase II studies typically last for anything up to 2 years, with anywhere between a few dozen and a hundred or more patients participating, depending upon the trial size. 

In this section, a brief summary of the nature, frequency, and consequences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in two clinical situations is presented. There are ADRs experienced by healthy volunteers and patients participating in clinical studies with potential new medicines and those experienced by patients who are prescribed licensed medicines.
