Vitamin theophylline

All quinolones interact with multivalent cations, forming chelation complexes resulting in reduced absorption. Major offenders are antacids vitamins containing calcium and iron can also be problematic. All fluoroquinolones interact with warfarin, didanosine (ddi), and phenytoin, resulting in decreased absorption or metabolism. Ciprofloxacin and other second-generation drugs interact with theophylline by decreasing its clearance, which leads to theophylline toxicity. [Pg.521]

Natural products have served as a major source of drugs for centuries, and about half of the pharmaceuticals in use today are derived from natural products. Quinine, theophylline, penicillin G, morphine, paclitaxel, digoxin, vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclosporin, and vitamin A all share two important characteristics they are cornerstones of modem pharmaceutical care, and they are all natural products. The use of natural substances, particularly plants, to control diseases is a centuries-old practice that has led to the discovery of more than half of all modem pharmaceuticals. [Pg.49]

Aminophylline Aminophylline should not be mixed with acidic drugs, as it becomes precipitated if the pH of the final solution falls below pH 8. Mixture with glucose may increase the pH above 10 where proteins, such as insulin and erythromycin, are unstable. Some drugs that are incompatible with aminophylline include amiodarone, benzylpenicillin potassium, cisatracurium, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, dobutamine, tetracycline hydrochloride, verapamil hydrochloride, warfarin sodium, and vitamin B and C injection. Alcohol-free theophylline should be stored in amber-colored containers maximum care must be taken to protect it against exposure to light.92-94... [Pg.345]

In healthy volunteers, theophylline reduced circulating pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin B6) concentrations, presumably by noncompetitive inhibition of pyridoxal kinase. Theophylline concentrations of approximately 10 gg/ml produced only partial inhibition, plasma pyridoxal kinase and pyridoxal concentrations being unaffected. The authors speculated that with theophylline overdose and greater inhibition, vitamin B6 deficiency might contribute to seizures (SEDA-14, 2). [Pg.3365]

Oxidative reactions catalysed by non-microsomal enzymes are less varied than those mediated by cytochrome P450 mono-oxygenases but are important in the metabolism of some drugs (e.g. isoproterenol, methylxanthines, methimazole, ethanol, chloral hydrate), endogenous substances (adrenalin, histamine) and naturally occurring compounds (vitamin A). Theophylline and caffeine (methylxanthines) simultaneously undergo microsomal cytochrome... [Pg.13]

Vitamin B12 and folate are both required for conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Increased serum homocysteine may help define vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. Homocysteine levels can also be elevated in vitamin Bg deficiency, renal failure, hypothyroidism, and in persons with a genetic defect in cystathionine /S-synthase. Additionally, elevated levels have been caused by medications including nicotinic acid, theophylline, methotrexate, and L-dopa. [Pg.1813]

A rational total synthesis is used for some simple alkaloids (adrenaline, theophylline, papaverine), low molecnlar peptide hormones (oxytocin, vasopressin), vitamins (biotin, folk acid, thiamine, riboflavin), phenolic acids (sahcyhc acid). It should, however, be observed that the synthetic substances are all racemic forms, whereas many natural products occur in the 1-form. [Pg.33]

The extraction of interesting purine alkaloids like theobromine or theophylline using SCCO2 has been described [21]. The isolation of jff-carotene and vitamin E from crude palm oil using a SCCO2 counter-current extraction, after esterification of the starting material with methanol, was described by Jungfer and Brunner [22]. [Pg.401]

There 1 no evidence of an adverse interaction if pyridoxal (a vitamin Bg substance) and theophylline are taken concurrently. There may be some reduction in theophylline-induced hand tremor. [Pg.1192]
