Virtual risk

A 25,000-pound per year production rate is not a demarcation between large and small ventures. Such a point would be at a far higher scale of production. Instead, the proposed 25,000-pound exemption represents an economically-justified and virtually risk-free means of aiding innovation in the chemical industry, particularly when coupled with appropriate chronic hazard control language as for intermediates. [Pg.33]

Dr. Bate is the editor of What Ths/c. Butterworth-Heinneman, 1997), a collection of papers that critically assess the way risk is regulated in society, and the author of several scholarly papers about risk and policies in developing countries. In addition, he has published numerous articles about risk and politics in newspapers and magazines, including the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Accountancy, and LM. His mostrecentbook is Life s Adventure Virtual Risk inaReal World (Butterworth-Heinemann, 2000). [Pg.5]

Virtual Sources The previous equations apply to point source releases. Real releases, such as a boiling pool of liquid or a streaming jet of flashing hquid, involve a more complex geometiy One approach Guideline.s for Chemical Proce.s.s Quantitative Risk Analy.sls, AIChE, 1989, p. 87) is to define a virtual source upwind from the ac tual source such that the computed plume matches the real plume. However, to achieve this, a concentration at a centerhne point directly downwind must be known. [Pg.2343]

In Great Britain the COSHH Regulations cover virtually all substances hazardous to health. (Excluded are asbestos, lead, materials dangerous solely due to their radioactive, explosive, or flammable properties, or solely because of high or low temperatures or pressures, or where risk... [Pg.108]

Environmental risk commmiication is one of the more important problems that industry faces. Since tlie mid 1980s, public concerns about the environment liave grown faster Uian concern about virtually any other national problem. There are two major categories or risk nonfixable and fixable. Nonfixable risks... [Pg.526]

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) have much longer life spans in the body (5 to 6 days) than other lipoproteins. Newly formed HDL contains virtually no cholesterol ester. However, over time, cholesterol esters are accumulated through the action of lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), a 59-kD glycoprotein associated with HDLs. Another associated protein, cholesterol ester transfer protein, transfers some of these esters to VLDL and LDL. Alternatively, HDLs function to return cholesterol and cholesterol esters to the liver. This latter process apparently explains the correlation between high HDL levels and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. (High LDL levels, on the other hand, are correlated with an increased risk of coronary artery and cardiovascular disease.)... [Pg.845]

Plutonium has a much shorter half-life than uranium (24.000 years for Pu-239 6,500 years for Pu-240). Plutonium is most toxic if it is inhaled. The radioactive decay that plutonium undergoes (alpha decay) is of little external consequence, since the alpha particles are blocked by human skin and travel only a few inches. If inhaled, however, the soft tissue of the lungs will suffer an internal dose of radiation. Particles may also enter the blood stream and irradiate other parts of the body. The safest way to handle plutonium is in its plutonium dioxide (PuOj) form because PuOj is virtually insoluble inside the human body, gi eatly reducing the risk of internal contamination. [Pg.870]

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 1989 covers virtually all substances hazardous to health. Only asbestos, lead, materials producing ionizing radiation and substances below ground in mines (which all have their own legislation) are excluded. The Regulations set out measures that employers must implement. Failure to comply with COSHH, in addition to exposing employees and others to risk, constitutes an offence and is subject to penalties under the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc. 1974. [Pg.1066]

Continuous, surface blowdown arrangements employ a multistage nozzle valve that permits the BW to expand and flash gradually and safely across each successive orifice and chamber with almost no noise. This effect reduces the flow velocity and virtually eliminates the risk of wire drawing. The BD valve is provided with a regulating lever and calibrated dial (or an electric actuator) for either manual or automatic BD rate adjustment. Continuous blowdown arrangements are entirely suitable for incorporation into FSHR systems. They are commonly employed for WT boilers. [Pg.76]

A virtually defunct form of chemical treatment program employed in older design, low heat-flux boilers, whereby the risk of BW scale formation is managed by means of a controlled reserve of carbonate ions. [Pg.720]

This study, like that of Fisher and Allen (1993), incorporated a linear multistage model. However, the mechanism of trichloroethylene carcinogenicity appears to be non-genotoxic, and a non-linear model (as opposed to the linearized multistage model) has been proposed for use along with PBPK modeling for cancer risk assessment. The use of this non-linear model has resulted in a 100-fold increase in the virtually safe lifetime exposure estimates (Clewell et al. 1995). [Pg.130]

Today s situation is virtually the reverse. No new nuclear power plants are under construction in countries that have a competitive electricity market Also, because of World Bank and other lenders reluctance to assist construction of nuclear plant, there are questions how many of the 25 or so reactors, now under construction, will be completed. In countries where public opinion matters, people perceive the risks, but see few benefits, whilst the electricity industry and governments, with a few exceptions, such as France and S. Korea, are too concerned about the vociferous opposition to this power source to do anything, but sit on... [Pg.63]

A real advance in the construction of delay detonators was made by Eschbach, who introduced delay compositions which evolved so little gas that there was no longer need to vent the detonator. This eliminated risk of pre-ignition of high explosive and also made it possible to provide fully waterproofed assemblies which gave delay times much more regular because of the removal of variable venting effects. Delay detonators of this type have now virtually superseded all others. [Pg.116]

Rifaximin, a virtually nonabsorbed antibiotic, is a semisynthetic rifamycin derivative, with a broad antimicrobial spectrum that includes most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, both aerobes and anaerobes [1, 2], Unlike systemically available antibiotics, this antimicrobial allows localized targeting (e.g. enteric or cutaneous) of pathogens and is associated with a minimal risk of systemic toxicity or side effects [3, 4], Provided that nonabsorbed antibiotics are as effective as systemically absorbed drugs for the target illness, their safety and toler-... [Pg.122]
