Vinyl caproate, caprylate, pelargonate, caprate, myristate, pahnitate, stearate, 10-hendecenoate (undecylenate) and oleate can be prepared in a similar manner, except that in the preparation of the pahnitate and stearate the fatty acids are added to a solution of mercuric acetate and sulfuric acid in vinyl acetate. Vinyl stearate is not redistilled, but the once-distilled product is recrystallized from acetone at 0° (3 ml. of acetone per gram of vinyl stearate). The amount of mercuric acetate employed was 2%, and the amount of 100% sulfuric acid was 0.3-0.4%, of the weight of the stearic acid. Average yields and properties of these vinyl esters are given in the table. [Pg.55]

Fatty acids are used in preparation of microspheres for controlled drug delivery. For example, poly(vinyl alcohol), substituted with lauric, myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids at different substitution degrees was employed for the preparation biodegradable microspheres containing progesterone or indo-... [Pg.88]

In standard classification for vinyl plastics used in biomedical applications, a plasticizer is specified with prefix letter The letter is followed by a number from 1 to 14 which characterizes the type of plasticizer (e g., 1 - none, 2 - adipic acid derivative, 3 -azelaic, 4 - benzoic, 5 - citric, 6 - isophthalic, 7 - myristic, 8 - phosphoric, 9 - phthalic, 10 - sebacic, 11 - terephthalic, 12 - poly ether, 13 - polyethylene glycol, 14 - polyesters, 999 - other). The second letter specifies secondary plasticizer (e.g., A - none, B - alkyl epoxy stearates, C - epoxidized tall oil, D - epoxidized soybean oil, E - epoxidized linseed oil, F - epoxidized sunflower oil, Z - other). This classification is used to guide design engineers. Classification is not applicable to long-term implants. If there is a conflict between provisions of this standard and detailed specification for a particular device, the latter takes precedence. [Pg.83]

Saturated fatty acids, such as myristic, palmitic, and stearic acid, have been used as the carboxylic acid component of vinyl esters [56]. In the hydroformylation with a heterogeneous Rh/C catalyst, mainly the branched aldehyde was observed, which in turn was converted into the corresponding alcohols (Scheme 6.97). [Pg.603]
