The seeds are used mainly as a diuretic and can help clear toxins from the system, especially in cases of gout where uric acid crystals collect in the joints. Root tinctures have been used to cure urinary disorders, such as urinary stones, and used as a kidney stimulant and cleanser. Fresh juice from the whole plant is also used as a cure for urinary tract inflammations and urethritis (http //www.innvista.com/health/herbs/ celery.htm). Our observations showed that wild animals consumed the highest number of plant species, which were also used by the local people against skin disorders and infections (Table 2), followed by those used for fever, as tonics, rheumatism and wounds. We also found that the plant parts used by humans and animals were not similar in most of the cases (Table 2), yet the overlap that occurs (44%), is of great interest. This overlap is mainly for ailments such as skin disorders, as tonics, jaundice, stomach ache, wounds and urinary disorder (Table 2). [Pg.192]

Paradoxically, considraing the essential benefits of NO, its overproduction leads to septic shock. Uncontrolled release may also be the cause of brain damage afta- a stroke and disorders such as Alzheimer s and Huntington s diseases. The occurrence of high levels of nitrite ion, NO2 (the product of NO oxidation), in the joints of people with rheumatoid arthritis indicates overproduction of NO as a response to inflammation. Similar associations have been established for schizophrenia, urinary disorders, and multiple sclerosis. The rapidly evolving story of NO is an example of how little we still know about the functions of the body, but also how rapidly a discovery leads to the evolution of an entire field. [Pg.1170]
