Urbanization, increase

In 2008, for the first time in the history of human society, more than half the world s human population lived in urban areas. This urbanization increased the recreational and aesthetic importance of park and garden areas. 

If the conditions are urban, increased turbulence is expected because of air flow around buildings. Thus mixing would increase, leading to increased estimates of ffy and fjz as follows, based on Table 4.6 ... 

Emissions of CO in the United States peaked in the late 1960s, but have decreased consistendy since that time as transportation sector emissions significandy decreased. Between 1968 and 1983, CO emissions from new passenger cars were reduced by 96% (see Exhaust CONTUOL, automotive). This has been partially offset by an increase in the number of vehicle-miles traveled annually. Even so, there has been a steady decline in the CO concentrations across the United States and the decline is expected to continue until the late 1990s without the implementation of any additional emissions-reduction measures. In 1989, there were still 41 U.S. urban areas that exceeded the CO NAAQS on one or mote days per year, but the number of exceedances declined by about 80% from 1980 to 1989. Over the same time period, nationwide CO emissions decreased 23%, and ambient concentrations declined by 25% (4). 

In the second quarter of the twentieth century, with the development of poly(vinyl chloride), nylon, polyurethane, and other polymers, many new and improved leather-like materials, so-called coated fabrics (qv), were placed on the market. Shortages of leather after World War 11 led to the expansion of these leather-like materials ("man-made" leathers) to replace leather in shoes, clothing, bags, upholstery, and other items. DurabiUty and waterproof quahties superior to leather made coated fabrics advantageous, in spite of imperfection in breathabihty and flexibiUty. Demands for shoes, clothing, and other items are stiU increasing due to growing world population and urbanization.

Despite these limitations, mobile monitoring systems have been used to obtain useful information, such as the verification and tracking of the St. Louis, Missouri, urban plume. The measurement of a well-defined urban plume spreading northeastward from St. Louis is shown in Fig. 15-2 (7). These data were collected by a combination of instrumented aircraft and mobile vans. Cross-sectional paths were flown by the aircraft at increasing distances downwind. Meteorological conditions of low wind speed in the same direction helped to maintain this urban plume in a well-defined...

Urban areas have roughness and thermal characteristics different from those of their rural surroundings. Although the increased roughness affects both the vertical wind profile and the vertical temperature profile, the effects due to the thermal features are dominant. The asphalt, concrete,... 

There have been some indications, although controversial, of increased precipitation downwind of major metropolitan areas. Urban addition of nuclei and moisture and urban enhancement of vertical motion due to increased roughness and the urban heat island effect have been suggested as possible causes. 

As mentioned in the previous section, the increased number of nuclei in polluted urban atmospheres can cause dense persistent fogs due to the many small droplets formed. Fog formation is very dependent on humidity and, in some situations, humidity is increased by release of moisture from industrial processes. Low atmospheric moisture content can also occur, especicilly in urban areas two causes are lack of vegetation and rapid runoff of rainwater through storm sewers. Also, slightly higher temperatures in urban areas lower the relative humidity. 

In the United States, in particular, recent legislation has mandated sweeping improvements to urban air quality by limiting mobile source emissions and by promoting cleaner fuels. The new laws require commercial and government fleets to purchase a substantial number of vehicles powered by an alternative fuel, such as natural gas, propane, electricity, methanol or ethanol. However, natural gas is usually preferred because of its lower cost and lower emissions compared with the other available alternative gas or liquid fuels. Even when compared with electricity, it has been shown that the full fuel cycle emissions, including those from production, conversion, and transportation of the fuel, are lower for an NGV [2]. Natural gas vehicles offer other advantages as well. Where natural gas is abundantly available as a domestic resource, increased use...
