The amount of HEU that becomes avadable for civdian use through the 1990s and into the twenty-first century depends on the number of warheads removed from nuclear arsenals and the amount of HEU in the weapons complex that is already outside of the warheads, ie, materials stockpdes and spent naval reactor fuels. An illustrative example of the potential amounts of weapons-grade materials released from dismanded nuclear weapons is presented in Table 7 (36). Several components are required in the practical appHcation of nuclear reactors (1 5). The first and most vital component of a nuclear reactor is the fuel, which is usually uranium slightly enriched in uranium-235 [15117-96-1] to approximately 3%, in contrast to natural uranium which has 0.72% Less commonly, reactors are fueled with plutonium produced by neutron absorption in uranium-238 [24678-82-8]. Even more rare are reactors fueled with uranium-233 [13968-55-3] produced by neutron absorption in thorium-232 (see Nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel reserves). The chemical form of the reactor fuel typically is uranium dioxide, UO2, but uranium metal and other compounds have been used, including sulfates, siUcides, nitrates, carbides, and molten salts. [Pg.210]

As a part of the power demonstration program of the AFC in the 1950s, the Enrico Fermi fast breeder reactor (Fermi-1) was built near Detroit by a consortium of companies led by Detroit Edison. Fermi-1 used enriched uranium as fuel and sodium as coolant, and produced 61 MWe. It suffered a partial fuel melting accident in 1966 as the result of a blockage of core coolant flow by a metal plate. The reactor was repaired but shut down permanently in November 1972 because of lack of binding. Valuable experience was gained from its operation, however (58). [Pg.221]

Uranium dioxide fuel is irradiated in a reactor for periods of one to two years to produce fission energy. Upon removal, the used or spent fuel contains a large inventory of fission products. These are largely contained in the oxide matrix and the sealed fuel tubing. [Pg.228]

Uranium-235 Enrichment. The enrichment of uranium is expressed as the weight percent of in uranium. For natural uranium the enrichment level is 0.72%. Many appHcations of uranium requite enrichment levels above 0.72%, such as nuclear reactor fuel (56,57). Normally for lightwater nuclear reactors (LWR), the 0.72% natural abundance of is enriched to 2—5% (9,58). As previously stated, uranium carbides are used as nuclear fuel (145). Two of the typical reactors fueled by uranium and mixed metal carbides are thermionic, which are continually being developed for space power and propulsion systems, and high temperature gas-cooled reactors (83,146,147). In order to be used as nuclear fuel, carbide microspheres are required. These microspheres have been fabricated by a carbothermic reduction of UO and elemental carbon to form UC (148,149). In addition to these uses, the carbides are also precursors for uranium nitride based fuels. [Pg.325]

Zirconium is used as a containment material for the uranium oxide fuel pellets in nuclear power reactors (see Nuclearreactors). Zirconium is particularly usehil for this appHcation because of its ready availabiUty, good ductiUty, resistance to radiation damage, low thermal-neutron absorption cross section 18 x 10 ° ra (0.18 bams), and excellent corrosion resistance in pressurized hot water up to 350°C. Zirconium is used as an alloy strengthening agent in aluminum and magnesium, and as the burning component in flash bulbs. It is employed as a corrosion-resistant metal in the chemical process industry, and as pressure-vessel material of constmction in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes. [Pg.426]

Hafnium-free zirconium alloys containing tin or niobium are used for tubing to hold uranium oxide fuel pellets inside water-cooled nuclear reactors. Zirconium —niobium alloys are used for pressure tubes and stmctural components in Canadian, the former USSR, and Germany reactor designs. [Pg.433]

Economic Aspects. The principal market for deuterium has been as a moderator for nuclear fission reactors fueled by unenriched uranium. The decline in nuclear reactor constmetion has sharply reduced the demand for heavy water. The United States has stopped large-scale production of D2O, and Canada is the only suppHer of heavy water at this time. Heavy water is priced as a fine chemical, and its price is not subject to market forces. [Pg.8]

The only large-scale use of deuterium in industry is as a moderator, in the form of D2O, for nuclear reactors. Because of its favorable slowing-down properties and its small capture cross section for neutrons, deuterium moderation permits the use of uranium containing the natural abundance of uranium-235, thus avoiding an isotope enrichment step in the preparation of reactor fuel. Heavy water-moderated thermal neutron reactors fueled with uranium-233 and surrounded with a natural thorium blanket offer the prospect of successful fuel breeding, ie, production of greater amounts of (by neutron capture in thorium) than are consumed by nuclear fission in the operation of the reactor. The advantages of heavy water-moderated reactors are difficult to assess. [Pg.9]

CP-1 was assembled in an approximately spherical shape with the purest graphite in the center. About 6 tons of luanium metal fuel was used, in addition to approximately 40.5 tons of uranium oxide fuel. The lowest point of the reactor rested on the floor and the periphery was supported on a wooden structure. The whole pile was surrounded by a tent of mbberized balloon fabric so that neutron absorbing air could be evacuated. About 75 layers of 10.48-cm (4.125-in.) graphite bricks would have been required to complete the 790-cm diameter sphere. However, criticality was achieved at layer 56 without the need to evacuate the air, and assembly was discontinued at layer 57. The core then had an ellipsoidal cross section, with a polar radius of 209 cm and an equatorial radius of309 cm [20]. CP-1 was operated at low power (0.5 W) for several days. Fortuitously, it was found that the nuclear chain reaction could be controlled with cadmium strips which were inserted into the reactor to absorb neutrons and hence reduce the value of k to considerably less than 1. The pile was then disassembled and rebuilt at what is now the site of Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A, with a concrete biological shield. Designated CP-2, the pile eventually reached a power level of 100 kW [22]. [Pg.437]

Carbide-based cermets have particles of carbides of tungsten, chromium, and titanium. Tungsten carbide in a cobalt matrix is used in machine parts requiring very high hardness such as wire-drawing dies, valves, etc. Chromium carbide in a cobalt matrix has high corrosion and abrasion resistance it also has a coefficient of thermal expansion close to that of steel, so is well-suited for use in valves. Titanium carbide in either a nickel or a cobalt matrix is often used in high-temperature applications such as turbine parts. Cermets are also used as nuclear reactor fuel elements and control rods. Fuel elements can be uranium oxide particles in stainless steel ceramic, whereas boron carbide in stainless steel is used for control rods. [Pg.10]

Large quantities of uranium oxide are required for nuclear reactor fuel. The uranium ore must be carefully purified and processed to desired shapes, causing high energy expenditure. [Pg.774]

Since the amount of fissile material in the fuel assemblies is only about 3 percent of the uranium present, it is obvious that there cannot be a large amount of radioactive material in the SNF after fission. The neutron flux produces some newly radioactive material in the form of uranium and plutonium isotopes. The amount of this other newly radioactive material is small compared to the volume of the fuel assembly. These facts prompt some to argue that SNF should be chemically processed and the various components separated into nonradioac-tive material, material that will be radioactive for a long time, and material that could be refabricated into new reactor fuel. Reprocessing the fuel to isolate the plutonium is seen as a reason not to proceed with this technology in the United States. [Pg.884]

Development efforts in the nuclear industry are focusing on the fuel cycle (Figure 6.12). The front end of the cycle includes mining, milling, and conversion of ore to uranium hexafluoride enrichment of the uranium-235 isotope conversion of the enriched product to uranium oxides and fabrication into reactor fuel elements. Nuclear fuel reprocessing was first undertaken with the sole purpose of recovering plutonium, for weapons use, from uranium irradiated in nuclear reactors. These reactors, called the production reactors, were dedicated to transmuting as much of the uranium as possible to plutonium.
