Unpredictable performance

Erom an applied environmental biotechnology point of view this lack of fundamental microbiology knowledge results in poorly understood system characteristics and inferior or unpredictable performance. A solution for this dilemma, employed in several laboratories, inclnding ours, is the assembly of controlled mixed cultures, in which... [Pg.200]

However, TSI-LC/MS applications did not completely capture the imagination of chemists and biologists in the pharmaceutical industry. TSI- LC/MS was overshadowed by its unpredictable performance and questionable ruggedness when compared to HPLC with ultraviolet (UV) detection. This perception was the case, in part, because pharmaceutical researchers were ready for a universal LC/MS system, but with very few limits. Simple methods to handle small and large molecules, combined with a gentle technique for ionization, were needed. Researchers were not content with the unique capabilities of TSI-LC/MS. They wanted few boundaries for applicability with familiar levels of analytical performance (i.e., similar to LC/U V). This requirement was not necessarily derived from an analytical perspective, but rather an industry perspective, which ultimately forms the basis of acceptance. Whether this requirement... [Pg.36]

Level 1 Unpredictable performance in terms of costs, schednle, and quality. Possibly less that 20% of issues raised will be resolved. There are often difficult team interactions, mainly becanse there are no defined processes to assist implementation of computer systems. [Pg.417]

Actually, computational convenience has almost always suggested using pairwise additive potentials for simulations of condensed phases also, though strictly two-body potentials are only acceptable for rarefied gases. The computational convenience of two-body potentials is maintained, however, if non-additive effects are included implicitly, i. e. with the so called two-body effective potentials. All empirical or semi empirical functions whose parameters have been optimized with respect to properties of the system in condensed phase belong to this class. As already observed, this makes these potentials state-dependent, with unpredictable performance under different thermodynamic conditions. [Pg.384]

Belts and conveyors require strength, toughness and abrasion resistance. This complex set of properties includes choice of polymers, fillers and additives. However contribution of non-linear viscoelastic behaviours would lead to unpredictable performance. [Pg.619]

Because of the unpredictable performance of thermocompressors, control of evaporators using them is more difficult than for a conventional system where it is necessary to set only steam and feed rates to maintain a constant evaporation rate. One way to provide flexibility with better operating stability is to use two or more thermocompressors in parallel. This permits capacity control without loss In energy economy. [Pg.184]

The use of automatic machine tools, often computer controlled and programmable, requires abrasive elements which have performance and lifetime reproductibihty. Natural abrasives suffer on both counts performance is limited and inconsistent quaUty leads to unpredictable lifetimes. Manufactured abrasives have both superior performance and consistency consequendy, they have largely replaced the natural ones. [Pg.11]

Decrements in vigilance (i.e., ability to detect small changes in one s environment that occur at unpredictable times) decreased exercise performance in both healthy persons and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease... [Pg.368]

The condition of the test metal is important. Clean metal samples with uniform finishes are preferred. The accelerating effects of surface defects lead to deceptive results in samples. The ratio of the area of a defect to the total surface area of the metal is much higlier in a sample than in any metal in service. This is an indication of the inaccuracy of tests made on metals with improper finishes. The sample metal should have the same type of heat treatment as the metal to be used in service. Different heat treatments have different effects on corrosion. Heat treatment may improve or reduce the corrosion resistance of a metal in an unpredictable manner. For the purpose of selectivity, a metal stress corrosion test may be performed. General trends of the performance of a material can be obtained from such tests however, it is difficult to reproduce the stress that actually will occur during service. [Pg.19]

The specificity of enzyme reactions can be altered by varying the solvent system. For example, the addition of water-miscible organic co-solvents may improve the selectivity of hydrolase enzymes. Medium engineering is also important for synthetic reactions performed in pure organic solvents. In such cases, the selectivity of the reaction may depend on the organic solvent used. In non-aqueous solvents, hydrolytic enzymes catalyse the reverse reaction, ie the synthesis of esters and amides. The problem here is the low activity (catalytic power) of many hydrolases in organic solvents, and the unpredictable effects of the amount of water and type of solvent on the rate and selectivity. [Pg.26]

Small amts of moisture can also affect expl performance. As little as 0.5% can cause unpredictable deton initiation and randomly variable deton vels, which could defeat the efficient use of an expl in, for example, a shaped charge application (Ref 26). See also Vol 4, D347-L D356-R... [Pg.167]

The selection of strings for the tournament is random, thus the results may vary each time the process is performed on a given starting population. This unpredictable selection of strings is the second time that random numbers have been used in the algorithm (the first was in the construction of the strings in the initial population) and random numbers will return shortly. It may seem surprising that random numbers are needed when the problem to be solved has a definite (albeit, still unknown) solution, but their use is a common feature in AI methods and, in fact, is fundamental to the operation of several of them. [Pg.126]

Once generated, these noise spikes cannot only appear on the input/output rails (causing related performance issues), but also infiltrate the IC control sections, causing it to behave anomalously, and unpredictably. We could even end up briefly losing the usual current limiting function too, leading to disastrous consequences. [Pg.149]

The performance of a pigment which is produced by mixed coupling does not always equal the sum of the characteristics of the individually coupled products. A new crystal modification, for instance, may lead to an unpredictable deviation in the application properties. On a cost-performance basis, the best approach is to add to the reaction mixture traces of a costly coupling component which is known to confer excellent properties on the product, in an attempt to promote a more favorable crystal modification. The resulting mixed product is expected to assume the modification of the trace coupling component and thus to improve its commercial performance without representing a financial strain [7]. [Pg.239]

Doublet reference states. Some patterns emerge from the calculations with doublet reference states. Table 5.9 presents a summary of all cases involving transitions between singlets and doublets. Ionization energy calculations perform well when a doublet reference state is used. However, electron affinity calculations are advisable only when the doublet reference state is cationic. Even here, it is preferable to reverse the roles of initial and final states by choosing the closed-shell neutral as the reference state in an ionization energy calculation. The P3 method is not suitable for attachment of an electron to a neutral doublet reference state to form a closed-shell anion. It is preferable to choose the anion as the reference state for a P3 calculation of an electron detachment energy. Results for triplets are unpredictable at best. [Pg.154]

The next study of wood modification was that reported by Baird (1969), who performed vapour-phase reactions of spruce with ethyl, n-butyl, /-butyl, allyl and phenyl isocyanate (PhNCO). Unfortunately, DMF was used as a catalyst for the reactions, which resulted in polymerization of PhNCO in the cell wall of the wood, leading to unpredictable results. No evidence was presented in support of the contention that polymerization had occurred, and since this requires an anionic catalyst initiator, this is considered unlikely. However, the presence of side reactions when DMF is used in conjunction with isocyanates has already been mentioned. Greater success was reported when butyl isocyanate was reacted with wood (presumably a consequence of the lower reactivity of this isocyanate... [Pg.86]

For people who have learned to operate as managers in the relatively predictable context of an established business, the uncertainty of pursuing a new initiative can be paralyzing. Because performance is unpredictable, such initiatives can appear to be riskier than the established business. Because data do not exist, or are hard to interpret, it is hard to know how to answer questions about the project, and difficult to anticipate what will happen next. Facts are not available assumptions are. [Pg.152]

Because of erratic responses, it was difficult to determine precisely the incapacitating dose of LSD. Unlike BZ, relatively small doses of LSD could affect performance profoundly in a few individuals, while a few others managed to perform reasonably well after higher doses. Most LSD subjects remained alert and at least partially in touch with the environment, while those who received BZ did not, making unpredictability a predictable feature of LSD responses. [Pg.121]
