The third type of models is empirical or semi-empirical, which utilize the measured relationship between the release rate, flame length and incident heat flux. The data in the UKOOA / HSE guidelines in Ref. 2 are of this category. They are summarized in Table 1. [Pg.2077]

This replaces the former UKOOA document Guidelines for Process Control and Safety Systems on Offshore Installations. It was prepared by representatives of EIC, EEMUA, Oil and Gas UK (formerly UKOOA) and HSE and addresses the responsibility and deliverables of organizations involved in the specification, supply, and maintenance of Safety Instrumented Systems. [Pg.165]

He has received numerous safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, National Fire Protection Association, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He was a member of the Fire Protection Working Group of the UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). He is the author of many technical papers and professional articles in various international fire safety publications. He has also written several other books which include. Application of HAZOP and What-lf Safety Reviews to the Petroleum, Petrochemical and Chemical Industries (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Editions), Fire Fighting Pumping Systems at Industrial Facilities, Encyclopedia of Fire Protection (1st and 2nd Editions) and Loss Prevention, and Safety Control Terms and Definitions. [Pg.477]

There are few guidelines for the use of adhesively bonded assemblies offshore as currently such structures are mainly welded steel. However, UKOOA (United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association) proposed a set of Guidelines for the use of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) pipework offshore. Part 4 of which includes sections on installation and assembly (UKOOA 1994). For adhesively bonded assemblies, a quality program is proposed, which requires the recording of key values, namely ... [Pg.1240]

Conventional safety assessment methods and cost benefit analysis approaches can be used to prepare a safety case. As the safety culture in the offshore industry changes, more flexible and convenient risk assessment methods and decision making approaches can be employed to facilitate the preparation of a safety case. The UKOOA framework for risk related decision support can provide an umbrella under which various risk assessment and decision making tools are employed. [Pg.67]

Life-cycle approach is required to manage the hazards that affect offshore installations. It should be noted that offshore saf ety study has to deal with the boundaries of other industries such as marine operations and aviation. In offshore safety study, it is desirable to obtain the optimum risk reduction solution for the total life cycle of the operation or installation, irrespective of the regulatory boundaries (UKOOA (1999)). The basic idea is to minimise/eliminate the source of hazard rather than place too high reliance on control and mitigatory measures. To reduce risks to an ALARP level, the following hierarchical structure of risk control measures should follow ... [Pg.68]

In offshore safety assessment, a high level of uncertainty in failure data has been a major concern that is highlighted in the UKOOA s framework for risk related decision support. Different approaches need to be applied with respect to different levels of uncertainty. [Pg.73]
