Types of Applications

The perfluorinated sulfonic acid (Nafion) membranes have found a great variety of electrochemical applications. These include the SPE water electrolyzers, alkaline water elec-trolyzers, hydrochloric acid electrolyzers, Na2S04 [Pg.440]

Potential applications of perfluorinated carboxylate membranes have been focused to date on the chlor-alkali process. It has been pointed out previously that these polymers in acid form are not desirable for electrochemical applications because of rather high resistance.  [Pg.440]

Perfluorinated ionomer membranes show considerable promise with respect to their performance characteristics, low resistivity, high permselectivity, and long-term stability. However, the present cost of these membranes is more than 300 per square meter. The relatively high cost limits their application in many electrochemical cells when cost effectiveness is a major concern. [Pg.441]

Non-fuel petroleum products cover an extremely wide range and are distinguished as much by their nature and physical aspects as by their types of application. [Pg.271]

The properties sought for these products depend on the type of application it is useful to distinguish motor oil from industrial lubricants. [Pg.281]

The analysis is thus relatively exact for heterogeneous surfaces and is especially valuable for analyzing changes in an adsorbent following one or another treatment. An example is shown in Fig. XVII-24 [160]. This type of application has also been made to carbon blacks and silica-alumina catalysts [106a]. House and Jaycock [161] compared the Ross-Olivier [55] and Adamson-Ling... [Pg.658]

Once a number of lead compounds have been found, computational and laboratory techniques are very successful in rehning the molecular structures to yield greater drug activity and fewer side elfects. This is done both in the laboratory and computationally by examining the molecular structures to determine which aspects are responsible for both the drug activity and the side effects. These are the QSAR techniques described in Chapter 30. Recently, 3D QSAR has become very popular for this type of application. These techniques have been very successful in the rehnement of lead compounds. [Pg.297]

Nature In some types of applications, associated pairs of obseiwa-tions are defined. For example, (1) pairs of samples from two populations are treated in the same way, or (2) two types of measurements are made on the same unit. For applications or tnis type, it is not only more effective but necessary to define the random variable as the difference between the pairs of observations. The difference numbers can then be tested by the standard t distribution. [Pg.497]

High-Pressure Compressors There is a definite trend in the chemical industry toward the use of high-pressure compressors with discharge pressures of from 34.5 to 172 MPa (5000 to 25,000 IbFin ) and wim capacities from 8.5 X 10 to 42.5 X 10 mVh (5000 to 25,000 ftVmin). These require special design, and a complete knowledge of the characteristics of the gas is necessary. In most cases, these types of applications use the barrel-type centrifugal compressor. [Pg.932]

With this equation the life of the bearing can be determined for different load conditions and is predetermined for the type of drive and service requirements. To select a proper bearing, therefore, the type of application and the loading ratio (CIP) should be carefully selected to ensure the required minimum life. Bearing manufacturers product catalogues provide the working life of bearings for different load factors and may be referred to for data on C, C and other parameters. [Pg.215]

The recommended class of accuracy will depend upon the type of application and is generally as noted below ... [Pg.476]

These are protection CTs lor special applications such as biased differential protection, restricted ground fault protection and distance protection schemes, where it is not possible to easily identify the elass of accuracy, the accuracy limit factor and the rated burden of the CTs and where a full primary fault current is required to be transformed to the secondary without saturation, to accurately monitor the level of fault and/or unbalance. The type of application tind the relay being used determine the knee point voltage. The knee point voltage and the excitation current of the CTs now form the basic design parameters for such CTs. They are classified as class PS CTs and can be identified by the following characteristics ... [Pg.479]

The activated carbon materials are produced by either thermal or chemical activation as granular, powdered, or shaped products. In addition to the form of the activated carbon, the final product can differ in both particle size and pore structure. The properties of the activated carbon will determine the type of application for which the carbon will be used. [Pg.240]

Another important application area for PSAs in the electronic industry focuses on the manufacturing, transport and assembly of electronic components into larger devices, such as computer disk drives. Due to the sensitivity of these components, contamination with adhesive residue, its outgassing products, or residue transferred from any liners used, needs to be avoided. Cleanliness of the whole tape construction becomes very critical, because residuals like metal ions, surfactants, halogens, silicones, and the like can cause product failures of the electronic component or product. Due to their inherent tackiness, acrylic PSAs are very attractive for this type of application. Other PSAs can be used as well, but particular attention has to be given to the choice of tackifier or other additives needed in the PSA formulation. The choice of release liner also becomes very critical because of the concern about silicone transfer to the adhesive, which may eventually contaminate the electronic part. [Pg.520]

The demands on the PSA performance for these types of applications can be very high, especially in the areas of creep, shear resistance and long-term durability. For these reasons, crosslinked acrylics and stabilized block copolymer adhesives have become the main PSA material choices. [Pg.521]

To avoid the need for a liner, the industry has also developed linerless labels that have the release coating on the face of the labels allowing them to be stacked without liner and to be peeled one at a time. The release coatings for these types of application are often quite different from those used on a conventional liner. Since the label is typically printed or written upon, ink-receptivity of the release coating becomes critical. As the industry identifies more and more applications requiring this type of performance, specialized release coatings have also been developed. [Pg.524]

One of the shorter-term applications is the use of protective films on vehicles for shipment from the manufacturer to the dealers. These protective films are typically polyolefins coated with a removable adhesive for easy application and removal without leaving hard to clean adhesive residue on the vehicle. Several adhesives have been reported for this type of application, including the less common polyisobutylene-based PSAs [139]. A possible advantage of combining a polyolefin backing with a polyisobutylene-based adhesive is that the protective... [Pg.528]

Cooling towers are broadly classified on the basis of the type of draft natural draft (natural convection), mechanical draft (forced convection) and mechanical and natural. Further distinction is made based on (1) the type of flow i.e. - crossflow, counterflow, cocurrent flow (2) the type of heat dissipation-wet (evaporative cooling), dry, wet-dry and (3) the type of application-industrial or power plant. Each of the major types of cooling towers has a distinct configuration. The major designs are summarized in Figures 1 through 8 and a brief description of each follows. [Pg.70]

In recent years a whole new generation of high performance engineering plastics have become commercially available. These offer properties far superior to anything available so far, particularly in regard to high temperature performance, and they open the door to completely new types of application for plastics. [Pg.7]

Phosphaies are used in an astonishing variety of donicsiic and industrial applications but their ubiquitous presence and their substantial impact on everyday life is frequently overlo(4ted. It will be convenient first lo indicate the specihc uses of individual compounds and the properties on which ihey are based, then to conclude with a brief summary of many diffcreni types of application and their interrelation. TTie most widely used compounds are the various phosphate salts of Na, K. NH4 and Ca. TTie uses of di-. iri- and poly-phosphaie.s are mentioned on pp. 527-29. [Pg.524]

The use of the Hammett equation has also been extended to several new types of applications. Since these are not germane to the subject matter of the present chapter, we wiU simply mention work on applications to ethylenic and acetylenic compounds the various applications to physical properties, such as infrared frequencies and intensities, ultraviolet spectra, polarographic half-wave potentials, dipole moments,NMR and NQR spectra, and solubility data and applications to preparative data and biological activity. [Pg.212]
