Tool quality can also affect the surface quality and over time, the tool itself can become porous. Replacing tools generally must be done as the wear will impact part quality to the point of rejection to most OEM standards. Tool hfe varies but 1000 parts is a common figure used to estimate lifetime tool costs. Tool cost is relatively inexpensive, since it is soft tooling. However, multiple tools are generally needed to meet OEM demands. As an example, a truck hood that is from the HSU process may need 6-10 molds to meet a demand of 10,000 units per year. Heavy trucks and farm tractors are using RIM parts made with poly-dicyclopentadiene (P-DCPD). This material went from industrial applications to heavy-vehicle exterior components competing with fiber glass reinforced polyester (FRP) (Chapter 15) and aluminum. The big breakthrough in the heavy truck arena came in 1996 with the Kenworth T2000 18-wheeler, which had 14 exterior components of P-DCPD varying in size from an 80 lb roof fairing to smaller parts of 10 to 15 lb each. In the past couple of years P-DCPD RIM has made its mark in the hood of Class 8 heavy trucks. [Pg.421]

Such glass fiber-reinforced composites based on the unsaturated polyester thermosets are usually fabricated as sheet molding compounds (SMC) and bulk molding compounds (BMC). These are widely used in various metal replacement applications because of their cost-effectiveness, rigidity, light weight, and corrosion resistance properties particularly useful in transportation (cars and trucks), constmction, pipe, and tank applications. Automotive and tmck body panel and strucmral component applications of SMC include doors, hatchbacks, hoods, front grilles, etc. Some nonautomotive applications of SMC and BMC include sanitaryware (bathtubs, shower stalls, sinks), appliances, business machine, and electrical components. [Pg.1863]

Weather-Protection Equipment. This equipment (Fig. 4.59) consists of devices to seal or cover the loading-dock area. Truck-dock seals used in conjnnction with flush docks are popular. They have flexible construction and are often inflated. The arriving truck backs into the seal surrounding the door to effect the seal. Also available are hood-type seals which are mechanically activated. Made of flexible material, the hood extends out from the dock and conforms to the shape of the truck or railcar. [Pg.236]
