Triphosphate, pentasodium

Phospha.tes, Pentasodium triphosphate [7758-29-4] sodium tripolyphosphate, STPP, Na P O Q, is the most widely used and most effective builder in heavy-duty fabric washing compositions (see also Phosphoric acid and phosphates). It is a strong sequestrant for calcium and magnesium, with a p c of ca 6, and provides exceUent suspending action for soils. Because of its high sequestration power, it also finds extensive appHcation in automatic-dishwashing detergents. Sodium tripolyphosphate forms stable hydrates and thus aids in the manufacture of crisp spray-dried laundry powders. 

Except for sodium orthophosphate (Na3P04), sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P207), pentasodium triphosphate (NajP3O10) and sodium metaphosphate (N%P3Q,) which are in crystalline forms, the rest of the phosphates are glasses. 

Some allowed food additives, for example, E-451 and F-452, contain the following PolyPs triphosphates - pentasodium triphosphate and pentapotassium triphosphate polyphosphates - sodium polyphosphate, potassium polyphosphates and calcium polyphosphate.

Quantitywise, pentasodium triphosphate [sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP)] is the most important sodium phosphate. Table 1.5-9 gives the capacities for pentasodium triphosphate, which is primarily used in detergents and cleaning agents.

The reduction in pentasodium triphosphate production in the 1970 s, particularly in the USA, was due to the passing on ecological grounds of legislation reducing the maximum permissible pentasodium triphosphate content in household detergents (Table 1.5-10).

A large part of the sodium carbonate consumed (e.g. 50% in the USA) is utilized in the glass industry, of which ca. 40% is used in the manufacture of bottle glass. Sodium carbonate serves both as a raw material and as a flux for the glass melt to dissolve the sand (see Section 5.1.2.2). A further 19% is utilized in the manufacture of chemicals, of which ca. 10% is for the production of sodium phosphates, mainly pentasodium triphosphate, in addition to silicates (sodium metasilicate pentahydrate and sodium orthosilicate), sodium chromate, sodium dichromate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium nitrate etc. About 13.5% is utilized in the soap and detergent industry and 2.5% in the paper and pulp industry. The samples with P/Si ratios smaller than 1.00 contain trisodium orthophosphate but not a-cristobalite. For these samples the silicon dioxide produced by equation 1 reacts further with an excess of sodium metasilicate to form glassy sodium silicate. The samples with P/Si ratios larger than 1.00 contain a-cristobalite and two of the following three phosphate species trisodium orthophosphate, tetrasodium diphosphate, and pentasodium triphosphate (high-temperature form). The quantity of a-cristobalite in these samples, of course, decreases with the increase of the P/Si ratio.
