DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT EVALUATION STRATEGIES, PROGRESS, AND PROSPECTS. Frank M. Tims, Ph.D., ed. 

To determine the success of treatment, evaluate whether the treatment plan restored normal sleep patterns, reduced daytime sequelae, and improved quality of life without causing adverse effects. Schedule patients for follow-up within 3 weeks for insomnia and within 3 months for other sleep disorders. Perform a detailed clinical history to determine the patient s perception of treatment progress and symptoms along with medication effectiveness and side effects. 

Following treatment, evaluate the goals of therapy versus the response that was achieved. Was there response to treatment or progression of disease If the patient is being treated with supportive care, then alleviation of symptoms and improvement in quality of life should be of primary importance. Be sure to document objective evaluations of the outcome in the care plan.

The metabolic effects of a neoadjuvant chemotherapy/radiochemotherapy can be assessed during and after treatment. Evaluation late in the course of treatment and after completion of treatment may predict survival and may be associated with the amount of residual viable tumor cells and histopathologic tumor response. However, the therapeutic relevance of this prognostic information is limited, as it is obtained too late for alteration of therapeutic strategy. Therefore, it is considered important to differentiate between response and nonresponse early in the course of neoadjuvant therapy.

Although column operation seems likely to be used for large scale technical applications of carbon adsorption to waste treatment, evaluation of the fundamental characteristics of adsorption is simpler with a batch technique. Furthermore, once suitable functional relationships for the variables have been established, extrapolating data from batch systems to predict behavior in continuous systems should be feasible.

In an open assessment of the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of oral terbinafine 125-250 mg/day for 1, 2, and 4 weeks for tinea capitis in 132 Brazilian children aged 1-14 years, adverse events were reported in 10 patients (65). The drug was prematurely withdrawn in one patient. In the post-treatment evaluation, two patients had abnormal bilirubin concentrations and eight patients had abnormal alkaline phosphatase activities none was considered clinically relevant.

Tralomethrin was tested for bee hazard in alfalfa fields pollinated by leafcutting bees and treated by airplane or helicopter. In a first test, the authors observed the fate of females nesting in shelters placed in separate plots of a large field, which received applications at different rates in the evening. In a second test they preferred to use separate fields to compare the effects of treatments. Evaluation of hazards were done by preapplication and post-application records of the number of active females per 5-second scan per nesting unit. This count was replicated 10 times. The number of females in 13 nest tunnels was also assessed (25 replications) at night before the application and 2 days after the application [28]. 

Production, storage, treatment, evaluation, expolitation and interpretation of spectroscopic data is strongly connected with intensive use of computers. Modern spectroscopy - as many other disciplines - would not be possible without the tremendous developments in hardware and software during the last decades. Most of the mentioned aspects are treated in the three parts of this section, although the authors have focuses on different subjects.
