Transport packaging applications

EPP is currently used in transport packaging applications and, increasingly, in the automotive sector. Examples of articles made from this material include side-on collision protection elements, sun visors, column and door moldings and bumper core elements (Eigs. 26-30). EPS is used mainly for packaging and heat insulation in the construction industry (Table 7). [Pg.209]

The ease of migration of small molecules in high polymers has been successfully exploited for gas separations, water purification and controlled release. These topics have been discussed earlier in this review. There is also, however a negative side to the comparative ease of transport in polymers compared with metals and glass. They are obviously not as good gas and vapor barriers and therefore have definite limitations for certain packaging applications. This subject will not be discussed further in this presentation. [Pg.108]

For most rigid packaging applications with thick polyolefin layers, this requirement is easily met. In cases of flexible packages (film wraps, etc.), the transport limitations should be checked. [Pg.185]

RETORT CALCULATION During the retort process we assume that no oxygen is present so that only water transport is considered. At retort temperatures the diffusion coefficient of water in materials of interest is sufficiently high so that a pseudo-steady-state model, in which linear profiles are assumed across all structural layers, can be used. The EvOH layer is assumed to be at a uniform water activity at a given time which is good assumption based on water permeability measurements in EvOH at humidities found in package applications (13 ). [Pg.208]

A1 is widely used because it is light, strong and easily machined. Some 60% of its use is in structural materials in building and construction, in transportation, packaging and containers. There are also marine applications. A1 is widely used as a 0.18 mm-thick household foil. An extensive use has been in overhead transmission lines because it weighs only half as much as Cu yet has comparable current-carrying capacity. A1 is used... [Pg.641]

The transport of organic compound in PLA has been the subject of only a few studies, but is of importance in food packaging applications. Ethylene,... [Pg.202]

Flexible foams also find use is packaging applications. Die-cut flexible foam is used to package costly goods such as delicate instruments, optical products, and pharmaceuticals. Semiflexible foam lining is used for cart interiors to protect auto and machine parts during transportation. [Pg.483]

VII.22. The application for approval of a transportation package should demonstrate that the calculational method (codes and cross-section data) used to establish criticality safety has been validated against measured data that can be shown to be applicable to the package design characteristics. The validation process should provide a basis for the reliability of the calculational method and should justify the value that is considered the subcritical limit for the packaging system. [Pg.352]

Over the last two decades, lignocellulosic fibers have started to be considered as alternatives to conventional manmade fibers, in the academic as well as commercial arena, for a number of areas including transportation, construction, and packaging applications. Besides wood fibers, some species of plants such as hemp, flax, kenaf, jute, and sisal, which have been utilized as fiber sources since historical times, once again have become the focus of research attention. This has left another fiber source underexploited agricultural residues [10,11]. [Pg.234]

An important application for polybutylene is plumbing pipe for both commercial and residential use. The excellent creep resistance of polybutylene allows for the manufacture of thinner wall pipes compared to pipes made from polyethylene or polypropylene. Polybutylene pipe can also be used for the transport of abrasive fluids. Other applications for polybutylene include hot melt adhesives and additives for other plastics. The addition of polybutylene improves the environmental stress cracking resistance of polyethylene and the impact and weld line strength of polypropylene. Polybutylene is also used in packaging applications. [Pg.37]

Regarding food packaging applications or food contact materials, there are few approaches made in this direction, considering especially silicones. This class of materials possesses properties such as (1) water and oil repelling (2) gas permeability and (3) insolubility in water, mineral oils, or alcohol [99]. Silicone rubber was also reported to be used for membrane vessels in the transport of human islets because it reduces the risk of hypoxia and thus reduces the risk of dysfunction or death [103]. [Pg.87]

The second part of the RID is devoted to the study of various hazard classifications, according to the same classification of materials and transport conditions applicable to packs, inscriptions and labeling, material and means of transport, and the illegality of collective loading and empty packages. [Pg.103]
