Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) provides the most common theoretical framework for contracts and vertical integration in livestock production. Contracts may reduce moral hazard problems through centralized decisions about input factors (feed, genetic, etc.) and production standards. The problem of adverse selection in case of unobservable quality characteristics (credence attributes) is decreased by contract systems with inherent monitoring approaches. A long-term orientation could enhance the processors ability to introduce new technologies. [Pg.52]

Some advanced predictions of contract theory and transaction cost economics have been hypothesized and empirically tested by an overall survey in the Hungarian dairy sector. Different methodological tools in the framework of multivariate analysis provided a qualitative basis to explain the focal research questions. Cluster analysis provides interesting results since we learned that different contracting practices co-exist depending on transaction characteristics in spite of the strictly regulated legal environment. [Pg.77]

The paper analyses some crucial organizational issues arising in the supply of safe food. Within the theoretical framework provided by Transaction Costs Economics, behavioural uncertainty and asset specificity are taken into account in order to analyse the influence of the characteristics of food on the choice of the structure of governance. Soimd theoretical reasons lead to the contention that hybrid forms are efficiently chosen by agents to tackle the questions posed by food safety. This idea is supported by empirical evidence from one of the most important food distribution companies in Italy. The study supports previous empirical evidence and thus confirms the validity of the approach in studying complex relationships along the supply chain. [Pg.287]

The theoretical literature on supply chain collaboration is diversified representing multiple perspectives. The diverse literature reflects the versatile nature of supply chain collaboration involving a variety of motives and objectives (Barringer and Harrison 2000 Hitt 2011 Verdecho et al. 2012 Fawcett et al. 2012). This study examines supply chain collaboration from multiple perspectives (1) technical-economic perspective, e.g. uncertainty reduction, transaction cost economics, resource based view, relational view, and extended resource based view (2) sociopolitical perspective, e.g. resource dependence theory, social exchange theory, and social dilemma theory (3) trust based rationalism and (4) learning and knowledge perspective. These multiple perspectives provide us with insights into the nature, forms, contents, and forces of supply chain collaboration. [Pg.18]
