Dissipative systems whether described as continuous flows or Poincare maps are characterized by the presence of some sort of internal friction that tends to contract phase space volume elements. They are roughly analogous to irreversible CA systems. Contraction in phase space allows such systems to approach a subset of the phase space, C P, called an attractor, as t — oo. Although there is no universally accepted definition of an attractor, it is intuitively reasonable to demand that it satisfy the following three properties ([ruelle71], [eckmanSl]) ... [Pg.170]

In the region of a first-order transition ip has equal minima at volumes V and V2, in line with the Maxwell construction. The mixed phase is the preferred state in the volume range between V and V2. It follows that the transition from vapour to liquid does not occur by an unlikely fluctuation in which the system contracts from vapour to liquid at uniform density, as would be required by the maximum in the Van der Waals function. By achieving random dispersion of the Kaolin in the sodium silicate solution prior to formation of the silica-alumina gel, it was possible to disperse the clay crystals. They condensed somewhat perpendicular to each other and were bound together by silica-alumina gel. I therefore speculated that spray drying, during which the gel system contracts, might create a dual structure. Most solutions do not exhibit ideal behavior, and the actual curve corresponding to the variation of the molar volume or enthalpy of the mixture deviates from a straight line (e.g., the solid line in Fig. 5.1). When the curve for the molar volume lies above the ideal mixture line, the system expands upon mixing when the curve lies below the line, the system contracts. In the case of the molar enthalpy, a curve that lies above the ideal mixture line corresponds to the system that absorbs heat (e.g., mixing lead bromide and water) a curve that lies below the line corresponds to the system releasing heat (e.g., mixing sulfuric acid and water). This non-ideal mixing in the case of the molar enthalpy is the principle used in cold packs and heat packs. We will develop mathematical models to describe non-ideal mixtures. A less-common activation parameter, the volume of activation (AF ), has been determined for a few Diels-Alder reactions carried out under pressure in liquid phase. The processes are cyclopentadiene dimerisation , isoprene dimerisation , addition of 2,3-dimethylbutadiene to butyl acrylate , addition of cyclopentadiene to dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate , and addition of maleic anhydride to 1,3-cyclohexadiene, /rans-l-methoxybutadiene and isoprene . Activation volumes are negative, i.e. the reacting systems contract on passing from the initial to the transition state. In some cases the transition state appears to be even smaller than the adduct, independently of the solvent . Some of these experimental results gave rise to controversial interpretations however, the most recent ones favour a concerted four-center mechanism for the reaction. [Pg.110]
