Manual handling training

Where a job involves considerable manual handling, employers must now train employees in the correct lifting procedures and provide the appropriate equipment necessary to promote the safe manual handling of loads. 

Under HSW, employers are required to provide suitable training to employees and this extends to include training in the various manual handling techniques - see Section 15.2. 

Every licensed air transport pilot must demonstrate their ability to operate the aircraft manually during recurrent training and proficiency checks in full flight simulators. However, simulator time is valuable to an airline. There are numerous items in addition to manual flying ability which must be assessed during these brief sessions. For example, the requirement for pilots to validate their low visibility operations proficiency dictates that much of the session may be flown using the automatics. Consequently the amount of time dedicated to manual handling may be minimal. 

However, a model can be constructed fora suitably small and not too complex work enviromnent and this can serve as an example for aity future full-scale exercises. Use manual handling where it is not possible to use any of the above methods. The risk of injury can be reduced if the workers are well trained, lighter kerb stones are used or devices which allow two people to share the lift are provided.

A safety survey is a detailed examination of a number of critical areas of operation, e.g. process safety, manual handling operations, or an in-depth study of the whole health and safety operations of a workplace. A survey examines, for instance, health and safety management procediues, environmental working conditions, occupational health and hygiene arrangements, the wide field of safety and accident prevention, and the system for the provision of information, instruction and training for staff and other persons affected by the organisation s operations. 

The aim of the assessment is to evaluate the risk associated with a particular task and identify control measures which can be implemented to remove or reduce it (which may include the use of handling devices and/or training). The assessments made under this requirement vrill have to be written down for all but the simplest of tasks or where the task is straightforward, of low risk, lasting only a short time and the time needed to record it would be disproportionate. Relevant assessments will have to be kept readily available and where a safety policy has been prepared (to comply with Section 2(3) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974) employers should outline their general policy and arrangements for manual handling in it.
