Some other studies were performed relating human exposure in urban areas based on ambient PM air concentrations determined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling applications. The three-dimensional CFD model MISKAM has been successfully implemented to provide better assessment of exposure to traffic-related air pollutants in urban areas [33]. [Pg.266]

Short-term exposure to air pollution has been known as a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for some time. Recently, however, it has been shown that long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution contributes to COPD as well [42]. Traffic-related air pollution includes PAHs and particulate matter. This finding demonstrates the need to limit exposures to toxic chemicals wherever possible when endpoints remain unknown. [Pg.61]

In the second study, 2497 kindergarten and first-grade children who were free of asthma and wheezing upon entering school were observed for 3 years. Traffic-related air pollution at home and at school was assessed. It was found that asthma risk increased by about 50% both near homes and near schools that were proximate to traffic-related air pollution [8]. Other asthma-related effects of pollution are discussed in Section 35.11. [Pg.491]

Abstract Gaseous and particulate emissions from vehicles represent a major source of atmospheric pollution in cities. Recent research shows evidence of, along with the primary emissions from motor exhaust, important contributions from secondary (due to traffic-related organic/inorganic gaseous precursors) and primary particles due to wear and resuspension processes. Besides new and more effective (for NO emissions) technologies, non-technological measures from local authorities are needed to improve urban air quality in Europe. [Pg.165]

Numerous measurements in outdoor air have shown a reasonably close agreement between the temporal variations of the concentrations of TVOCp g and a variety of traffic-related pollutants, e.g. carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO ) and particulate PAHs. Previous studies have reported comparisons between TVOCp g and NO with correlation coefficients between 0.69 and 0.79 (Kruger et al., 1995 and Ekberg, 1995). The same studies also reported correlation coefficients in the interval... [Pg.78]

Iron is the most prominent transition metal present in airborne PM related to traffic air pollution. Iron chelators such as EDTA and desferrioxamine can be used to assess its role in ROS production. Addition of EDTA-Na2 in the mixture with PM increased the hydroxyl radical production, whereas the addition of desferrioxamine inhibited HO formation totally by blocking aU available valenees of iron. [Pg.422]
