Tracer types

Tracer Type. A discrete quantity of a foreign substance is injected momentarily into the flow stream and the time interval for this substance to reach a detection point, or pass between detection points, is measured. From this time, the average velocity can be computed. Among the tracers that have historically been used are salt, anhydrous ammonia, nitrous oxide, dyes, and radioactive isotopes. The most common appHcation area for tracer methods is in gas pipelines where tracers are used to check existing metered sections and to spot-check unmetered sections. [Pg.67]

Procedures. Batch equilibrations of interbed solids (Mabton Interbed, Rattlesnake Ridge sandstone, or tuff), tracers, and groundwaters were used to measure radionuclide distributions between solid and liquid phases. Triplicate measurements were made for each combination of temperature, redox condition, tracer concentration, tracer type, groundwater composition, and interbed sample. Constant temperatures were maintained by placing the... [Pg.11]

Use of each of these tracer types has been beset by certain problems. The chemical tracers are difficult to detect except in the highest concentrations, at which point their use leads to a modification of the system... [Pg.523]

Two different types of dynamic test have been devised to exploit this possibility. The first and more easily interpretable, used by Gibilaro et al [62] and by Dogu and Smith [63], employs a cell geometrically similar to the Wicke-Kallenbach apparatus, with a flow of carrier gas past each face of the porous septum. A sharp pulse of tracer is injected into the carrier stream on one side, and the response of the gas stream composition on the other side is then monitored as a function of time. Interpretation is based on the first two moments of the measured response curve, and Gibilaro et al refer explicitly to a model of the medium with a blmodal pore... [Pg.105]

The methods for detection and quantitation of radiolabeled tracers are deterrnined by the type of emission, ie, y-, or x-rays, the tracer affords the energy of the emission and the efficiency of the system by which it is measured. Detection of radioactivity can be achieved in all cases using the Geiger counter. However, in the case of the radionucHdes that emit low energy betas such as H, large amounts of isotopes are required for detection and accurate quantitation of a signal. This is in most cases undesirable and impractical. Thus, more sensitive and reproducible methods of detection and quantitation have been developed. [Pg.439]

Technetium-99m coordination compounds are used very widely as noniavasive imaging tools (35) (see Imaging technology Radioactive tracers). Different coordination species concentrate ia different organs. Several of the [Tc O(chelate)2] types have been used. In fact, the large majority of nuclear medicine scans ia the United States are of technetium-99m complexes. Moreover, chiral transition-metal complexes have been used to probe nucleic acid stmcture (see Nucleic acids). For example, the two chiral isomers of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)mthenium (IT) [24162-09-2] (14) iateract differentiy with DNA. These compounds are enantioselective and provide an addition tool for DNA stmctural iaterpretation (36). [Pg.173]

Concentration The main types are Cg, the effluent from a vessel with impulse input of tracer C° = m/V, the initial mean concentration resulting from impulse input of magnitude m C, the effluent from a vessel with a step input of magnitude Cf. [Pg.757]

Pulse A type of input in which the concentration of tracer in the input stream is changed suddenly, maintained at a non-zero value for a definite period, then changed to the original value and maintained that way for the period of interest. When the pulse is of constant magnitude it is called a square pulse. [Pg.758]

The study found that the slot-type inlet at the bottom of the cabinet door resulted in higher pressure losses (lower CJ than the diffuser or perforated plate inlet. The exhaust configuration had little effect on Q or tracer gas clearance time. The study also concluded that an exhaust rate 0.118 m s for a two-cylinder cabinet was sufficient as little improvement was seen with an increase to 0.165 m s F" The slotted inlet took longer to clear a leak than either the perforated plate or diffuser inlet. Measured coefficients of entry for a two-cylinder gas storage cabinet are shown in Table 10.9. [Pg.897]

For example, the type test of a laboratory fume hood includes determination of the concentration at various points across the opening of the hodd by using various tracer source locations inside the hood. The commissioning test could concentrate on the measurements taken at one point in the opening with one source location. [Pg.1014]

Plug-flow behaviour has been shown in this type of reactor by the use of tracer studies (Table 8.6). [Pg.225]

When Mg is alloyed with Al, for use in some incendiary, tracer and photoflash compns, the requirements of the US Armed Forces are given in the Mil Spec entitled, Magnesium-Aluminum Alloy, Powdered (Ref 1). It covers two types of Mg-Al alloy, Type A (50/50), and Type B (65/35)... [Pg.26]

At the top end of the program monitoring scale is the use of online fluorescence tracing systems, whereby tracer dye polymers form part of the water treatment program and their concentration can be measured online at various locations throughout the boiler plant system. Much less expensive, handheld fluorometers are now available to conduct the same type of analysis at the laboratory bench or on the boiler house firing-floor. These tracer dye polymers can be used to determine ... [Pg.662]

In laminar flow, a similar mixing process occurs when the liquid is sheared between two rotating cylinders. During each revolution, the thickness of the fluid element is reduced, and molecular diffusion takes over when the elements are sufficiently thin. This type of mixing is shown schematically in Figure 7.3 in which the tracer is pictured as being introduced perpendicular to the direction of motion. [Pg.278]

The flow patterns for single phase, Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids in tanks agitated by various types of impeller have been repotted in the literature.1 3 27 38 39) The experimental techniques which have been employed include the introduction of tracer liquids, neutrally buoyant particles or hydrogen bubbles, and measurement of local velocities by means of Pitot tubes, laser-doppler anemometers, and so on. The salient features of the flow patterns encountered with propellers and disc turbines are shown in Figures 7.9 and 7.10. [Pg.294]

Equipment, The reactor was 1.523 liter, 316 stainless steel cylindrical, jacketed vessel equipped with two multiblade, paddle-type agitators. Tracer studies showed the reactor was well-mixed. A thermocouple measured temperature and was recorded continuously. Feed tanks, tubing, pumps and valves were made of stainless steel and had teflon seals. [Pg.381]

The advent of fast computers and the availability of detailed data on the occurrence of certain chemical species have made it possible to construct meaningful cycle models with a much smaller and faster spatial and temporal resolution. These spatial and time scales correspond to those in weather forecast models, i.e. down to 100 km and 1 h. Transport processes (e.g., for CO2 and sulfur compounds) in the oceans and atmosphere can be explicitly described in such models. These are often referred to as "tracer transport models." This type of model will also be discussed briefly in this chapter. [Pg.62]

A final point has to do with the relative Insensitivity of the pore averaged dlffuslvlty on the density structure. Both the LADM and the generalized tracer diffusion theory provide a rational explanation for this fact. The reasons for the Insensitivity may be Identified In the double (triple for the tracer diffusion theory) smoothing Induced by the volume averaging and by the very nature of the molecular Interactions In liquids which makes some type of averaging over the densities In the neighborhood of a certain point necessary. [Pg.277]

C22-0083. Many places have underground water, called aquifers, that can be tapped using wells. Depending on the types of geological formations above these aquifers, water from the surface may or may not reach these underground reservoirs. How could radioactive tracers be used to determine if rainwater falling on a particular location makes Its way down into an aquifer beneath that location ... [Pg.1618]

GC/MS. A large number of DFAs were identified but their compositions and amounts depend on the nature of sugar used for caramelization. Fructose caramel contains the highest amount of DFAs (more than 39% of dry matter), while glucose caramel contains mainly glucobioses. In sucrose caramel, both types of compounds were found in similar proportions. Based on these observations, DAFs are considered suitable tracers for the determination of caramel authenticity. ... [Pg.338]

In summary, the results from the fixed bed reactor study provided evidence as to the effect of Au and KOAc on the performance of the catalyst, though, these experiments did not give any information on the perturbation of the reaction pathways with the addition of Au and KOAc. For this type of information, additional experiments were performed using the TAP reactor with 1,2 C-labeled ethylene used as an isotopic tracer of the kinetics. [Pg.192]

For axial dispersion in the micro-channel reactor, the usual relationships from Taylor-Aris theory were employed. In order to assess the performance of both reactor types, the widths of two initially delta-like concentration tracers are compared after they have passed through the flow domain. The results of this comparison are displayed in Figure 1.16. [Pg.35]
