Toxic feelings

Even though triamcinolone has an apparently decreased tendency to cause salt and water retention and edema and may induce sodium and water diuresis, it causes other unwanted side effects, including anorexia, weight loss, muscle weakness, leg cramps, nausea, dizziness, and a general toxic feeling (55). Intramuscular triamcinolone is reportedly effective and safe in the treatment of dermatoses, and in combination with folic acid antagonists, it is effective in the treatment of psoriasis (56,57). [Pg.1329]

Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals. The main use of hexadecanol (cetyl alcohol) is in cosmetics (qv) and pharmaceuticals (qv), where it and octadecanol (stearyl alcohol) are used extensively as emoUient additives and as bases for creams, Hpsticks, ointments, and suppositories. Octadecenol (oleyl alcohol) is also widely used (47), as are the nonlinear alcohols. The compatibiHty of heavy cut alcohols and other cosmetic materials or active dmg agents, their mildness, skin feel, and low toxicity have made them the preferred materials for these appHcations. Higher alcohols and their derivatives are used in conditioning shampoos, in other personal care products, and in ingested materials such as vitamins (qv) and sustained release tablets (see Controlled RELEASE technology). [Pg.449]

Toxicity. Its inhalation causes headaches and an unwell feeling (Ref 2)... [Pg.104]

Whilst it is obvious that the lower the LD50 or LC50 is the more toxic the chemical, it is difficult to obtain a feel for how toxic the chemical may be to humans. Several scales have been developed to help compare toxicity data, a commonly used one developed by Hodge and Sterner is shown in Table 1.2. [Pg.31]

Toxic operations must be supported by a good communications system. In laboratories where communications are inadequate, workers will naturally use "runners" for communication needs. This practice results in avoidable traffic in and out of toxic areas which increases the opportunities for contamination to spread. In emergencies, a phone or intercom can help ensure that assistance is tailored to the actual need. An "all purpose" response to an alarm will normally be less rapid at a time when speed may be of the essence. Video cameras trained on critical operations add a measure of safety, but annoy the workers who may feel that the purpose of the system is to "spy" on them. As a minimum, the laboratory doors should have windows so that entering personnel don t blunder into a rapidly developing scenario. [Pg.238]

I had a lot of anger work to do, and did a lot of it by writing in a journal. I became aware that some of my thoughts and feelings were toxic to me, too. For example, if I believe that I am selfish— which is a toxic thought—I ll create guilt about it, and guilt is a toxic reaction. [Pg.191]

When I buy new clothes I know I won t be able to wear them around Elizabeth for a while, because that s one of the things that makes her sick. I actually feel worse for her because it s so hard for her to find clothing she can wear. One out of twenty pieces of clothing is safe for her. All the clothes we buy are made of natural fibers so the level of toxicity is lower. [Pg.253]

So my message to the chemical industry broadly and in particular to the segment of small businesses is to not let the PMN requirements limit your creative spirit in the development and commercialization of new chemicals. The Office of Toxic Substances in EPA stands ready to assist you at no cost in filling out the forms and distinguishing clearly what is minimally essential for risk assessment purposes from what is optional. We have trained consultants in the northeastern and mid-west sections of the country ready to travel to your location and advise you in a confidential way on PMNs. Our staff in Washington can be immensely helpful and you should feel free to discuss your specific situation with them. And, to top it off, we have one recently-retired experienced chemcial industry man concentrating his entire effort to assist the small business man in any TSCA-related matter. His name is Dr. Bob Toomey give him a call on the Industry Assistance Office toll-free line. [Pg.22]

The final element of this federal impact on confidentiality is that certain laws require certain things to be made public. The Toxic Substances Control Act has several useful confidentiality provisions in 14, but it adversely affects confidentiality when it prohibits the EPA withholding of health and safety "studies." That term is not well defined at all. There are conflicting views about which items are "studies." From a careful reexamination of the law, I feel that identity can be confidential and need not be part of a study, if the... [Pg.136]

While not officially required, the FDA does have the authority to request, on a case-by-case basis, specific tests it feels may be necessary to address a point of concern. A genetic toxicity test could be part of such a request. In general, therefore, companies deal with genetic toxicity (after screening ) on a case-by-case basis, dictated by good science. If more than a single administration is intended, common practice is to perform the tests prior to submitting an IND. [Pg.59]

Ideally, only the 100% pure sample should be tested however, impurity-free samples are difficult to obtain and preparation of formulations (as previously discussed) is frequently essential. The toxicity of impurities or formulation components should be examined separately if the investigator feels that they may contribute significantly to the toxicity of the test substance. [Pg.483]

Calculations of the kind discussed in this section while not providing precise values are very useful in that they provide a feel for what happens to toxic organic substances incorporated into soil by sewage addition and effects of rainfall, etc. on these values over a period of time. [Pg.484]

Only a few ahphatic fluoro-nitro compounds have been examined, and if n is odd the material is toxic. Having regard, however, to the known relaxation of smooth muscle, irrespective of the type of innervation, by the nitrite ion, the writer feels that caution is required in drawing conclusions regarding the toxic action of fluoro-nitro compounds. [Pg.178]
