Toolbox meeting

Attend all safety, health, and toolbox meetings (mandatory). 

NOTE Staple any handouts or materials used during the toolbox meeting. 

Employee attendance at a toolbox meeting mnst be recorded on the Employee Training Record Form. If discussion at the meeting identifies a suspected safety or health hazard, a copy of the form must be forwarded to the site superintendent. 

First line supervisors again play an important role in issue prevention by setting an example of safe work and by being proactive about safety in toolbox meetings, in their day-to-day contact with team members and in ongoing hazard identification. Clearly a supervisor may have difficulty if they are less well trained in OHS than a health and safety representative.

The safety committee is supplemented with other forums such as crew and toolbox meetings as needed. 

Some organizations have a regular toolbox meeting, say, once per week. The aim of a toolbox meeting is to ensure that employees are focused on safety and following the practices and procedures required to safely perform specific tasks. 

High risk activities, like confined space entry or hot work, may require a toolbox meeting before the task is started. 

Figure 21.4 provides a tool for documentation of safety talks or toolbox meetings, which the company can maintain to verify such efforts. 

To maintain awareness, update training, and convey important safety and health information, supervisors or forepersons will conduct at least weekly toolbox safety meetings, usually before the start of work. These toolbox meetings may be held more frequently, depending on the circumstances (i.e., fatality, injury, new operations, etc.). Each supervisor will complete the toolbox meeting form (see example. Figure 21.4), which includes the topic and attendees.
