Often the catalysts described in the Hterature are not quite the same as those used in industrial processes, and often the reported performance is for pure single-component feeds. Sometimes the best quantitative approximations that can be made from the available Hterature are those based on reported kinetics of reactions with pure feeds and catalysts that are similar to but not the same as those used in practice. As a first approximation, one may use the pubHshed results and scale the activity on the basis of a few laboratory results obtained with reaHstic feeds and commercially available catalysts.

While the various strategies described above have proven promising, SOFC electrodes remain largely empirically understood and far from optimized and suffer from numerous short- and long-term degradation problems. The TSS has less potential for maximum emission control as the WGS and electrostatic precipitator (ESP). While all three technologies were designed to meet NSPS/ MACT, only the WGS and ESP can meet more stringent requirements. TSS performance can typically achieve d50 grade efficiency down to 2 microns. Most reported performance values result in emissions of 0.4-0.8 Ib/Mlb coke. Future PM2 5 regulations are a concern for TSS applications. By definition, TSS units cannot effectively remove small particles due to the cyclonic operation.

Subsequent to reports from the author s laboratory detailing the performance capabilities of the 1.7 mm submicro-probe, Bruker Instruments announced the development of a 1 mm probe, which is presently the smallest volume conventional (sample tube) NMR probe in commercial production. The sample volume of the 1 mm tubes is approximately 5 pL. Curiously, although Bruker reported data using ibuprofen (4) and strychnine (5), as were used in the initial reports on the development of the 1.7 mm submicro-NMR probe,12 13 they reported performance data relative to conventional and cryogenic 5 mm probes, and made no mention of a comparison to 3 or 2.5 mm probes, which would have been a more logical comparison. On this basis, Schlotterbeck and co-workers14 note that with a 1mm tube (5 pL volume for the 1 mm probe and 22 pL fill volume when used in the 5 mm... 

Not many publications report performance data with BAM s membranes. The only publication we are aware of is by Stone et al., which also discusses the possibility of introducing a phosphonic acid functionality [98]. Figure 27.55 shows the performance data from this source. 

The fact that residual chloride can affect the catalytic properties of supported Au catalysts in more than one way is a possible reason for the reported performances of Au catalysts being very different amongst the various research groups [125], and why apparently inconsequential changes in synthesis variables sometimes have deleterious effects [42]. Understanding the chloride effect will enable a better control of the variables, which are critical to active catalyst preparation.
