TO-package

In aqueous solution, malic acid can be mildly corrosive toward aluminum and corrosive to carbon steel. Under normal conditions, it is not corrosive to stainless steels, which usually are the constmetion materials for processes involving malic acid. Malic acid is also virtually noncorrosive to tinplate and other materials used to package acidulated foods and beverages (Table 3) (27). 

AppHcations for electroplated indium coatings include indium bump bonding for shicon semiconductor die attachment to packaging substrates and miscehaneous appHcations where the physical or chemical properties of indium metal are desired as a plated deposit. 

These processes are considerably more complex in actual CMOS fabrication. First, the lower layers of a CMOS stmcture typically have a twin-tub design which includes both PMOS and NMOS devices adjacent to each other (see Fig. 3b). After step 1, a mask is opened such that a wide area is implanted to form the -weU, followed by a similar procedure to create the -weU. Isolation between active areas is commonly provided by local oxidation of sihcon (LOCOS), which creates a thick field oxide. A narrow strip of lightly doped drain (LDD) is formed under the edges of the gate to prevent hot-carrier induced instabiUties. Passivation sidewalls are used as etch resists. A complete sequence of fabrication from wafer to packaged unit is shown in Figure 10. 

Separate ketdes and backwash towers are frequendy used to convert ion-exchange resins from one ionic form to another prior to packaging, and to cleanse the resin of chemicals used in the functionalization reactions. Excess water is removed from the resin prior to packaging by a vacuum drain. Both straight line filters and towers or columns are used for this purpose. 

The polymeric encapsulating resin, modified by additives, must possess adequate mechanical strength, adhesion to package components, manufacturing and environmental chemical resistance, electrical resistance, GTE matching, as weU as thermal and moisture resistance in the use-temperature range. 

Pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals account for 6% of the Hquid-phase activated carbon consumption (74). Many antibiotics, vitarnins, and steroids are isolated from fermentation broths by adsorption onto carbon foUowed by solvent extraction and distillation (82). Other uses in pharmaceutical production include process water purification and removal of impurities from intravenous solutions prior to packaging (83). 

The crystalline sodium chlorate is usually dried in rotary driers to less than 0.2 wt % moisture content and is loaded into shipping containers or stored in moisture-free bins or silos prior to packaging. For conventional chlorine dioxide generators, sodium chlorate is shipped as a solution containing ca 200 g/L (15 wt %, 3.4 M) sodium chloride ca 350 g/L (26 wt %, 3.3 M) sodium chlorate and 130 ppm chromium. Alternatively, for newer chlorine dioxide generators, 600 g/L sodium chlorate 30 g/L sodium chloride and less than 30 ppm chromium is used. 

The least compHcated clay minerals are the 1 1 clay minerals composed of one tetrahedral (T) layer and one octahedral (O) layer (see Fig. 1). These 1 1 clay minerals are also referred to as TO minerals. The TO package has a basal spacing (nominal thickness) of 0.7 nm (7 E) and they are commonly referred to as 7 E minerals. Kaolinite, the dioctahedral 1 1 mineral, has filling two of three octahedral sites, and serpentine [12168-92-2J, (Mg)3Si205(0H)4, the trioctahedral 1 1 mineral has filling all three octahedral sites. The kaolin minerals have limited substitution in the octahedral... 

Robotics The introduction of robotics has given a new dimension to packaging in that it is now possible to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy at notably lower cost than if done by people. The manufacture of robots is well established with corporations of substantial resources providing a quality product with continuity of service, supply, and software support. There is also a specialty industry which is available to supply both accessory hardware and software which are custom designed to handle specific user situations. Economic analysis needs to be done before making the decision as to whether to automate using robots, fixed automation, or the labor of people aided by work aids. 

Storage rooms are similar in principle to packages, but the rate of entry of moisture is less predictable. Replacement of the air and diffusion of water vapour will have a considerable effect on the atmosphere with building materials other than glass and metals, and will vary markedly with weather conditions. 

An important selection of materials to packaging, particularly food, is based on the permeability of the materials to oxygen, water vapor, and, in the case of packaging bananas, to ethylene gas that is used to artificially ripen the bananas. Selective permeability provides chemical separations, one of the most interesting of which is the use of PTFE materials to separate the hexafluorides of the different isotopes of uranium. 

Plastics are extensively used in medicine to package drugs, ointments, and accessories. Plastics serve to protect medicines, surgical/ clinical equipment, medical materials, etc. from contamination and breakage in many ways, from single-service squeeze packs of cough syrup to carrying cases used to ship human eyes between hospital eye banks.
