Thyroid tablets

The total thyroid hormone content of thyroid glands and the ratio of T3 to T4 vary somewhat from one species to another. Thyroid USP preparations are therefore standardized on the basis of their iodine content. Much of the iodine in these preparations is in the metabolically inactive form of iodotyrosines. Thus, a given preparation may satisfy the USP iodine assay requirements and yet contain low amounts of T4 and T3. Thyrar (a beef extract) and Armour Thyroid tablets (a pork extract) are evaluated by additional biological assays to ensure consistent potency from one batch to another. 

A. An acute ingestion of more than 5 mg of levothyroxine (T4) or 0.75 mg of triiodothyronine (T3) is considered potentially toxic. An adult has survived an ingestion of 48 g of unspecified thyroid tablets a 15-month-old child had moderate symptoms after ingesting 1.5 g of desiccated thyroid. 

Raw materials. Raw materials from natural origin may be highly contaminated with micro-organisms especially spore-forming bacteria and moulds and in some cases with more critical Enterobacteriaceae. Soon after a publication on salmonellosis in more than 200 persons caused by the contamination of thyroid tablets with two types of Salmonella originating from the raw material [53], proposals for the examination of non-sterile pharmaceutical preparations and acceptance criteria were published [54].

Potassium iodine tablets can be used to reduce radioactive iodine exposure to the thyroid gland. According to the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP), taking 130 milligrams of potassium iodine at or before exposure to radioactive iodine effectively blocks nearly 100% of radioactive iodine from reaching the thyroid.1 Waiting 4 hours after exposure to take potassium iodine... 

Q76 Levothyroxine sodium is the synthetically prepared sodium salt of the natural isomer of thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine sodium tablets are unstable and require administration on an empty stomach.

Bromine and Iodine Compared to chlorine, much less bromine and iodine are produced annually because there are fewer commercial uses for their compounds. Inevitably, the infrequent isolation of true pathogens, such as Salmonella spp. and the reporting of associated infections following the use of products contaminated with these organisms (tablets, pancreatin and thyroid extract), have attracted considerable attention. More often, the isolation of common saprophytic and non-fastidious opportunist contaminants with limited pathogenicity to healthy individuals has presented a significant challenge to compromised patients.
