The tracer solution is made from oil soluble bromobenzene with the radioactive isotope Br-82. The tracer solution is injected through a thin nozzle inserted into the pipeline through the valve previously connected to the injection instrumentation. The injection device provides a very sharp beginning and termination of the fraction of labelled oil. [Pg.1060]

The most widely used experimental method for determining surface excess quantities at the liquid-vapor interface makes use of radioactive tracers. The solute to be studied is labeled with a radioisotope that emits weak beta radiation, such as H, C, or One places a detector close to the surface of the solution and measures the intensity of beta radiation. Since the penetration range of such beta emitters is small (a ut 30 mg/cm for C, with most of the adsorption occurring in the first two-tenths of the range), the measured radioactivity corresponds to the surface region plus only a thin layer of solution (about 0.06 mm for C and even less for H). [Pg.77]

MG-Oe). Because it can be roUed to very thin sheets, Vicahoy is used widely in antitheft labels in department store articles and hbrary books. [Pg.383]

Eor products having relatively low specific activity, such as some compounds labeled with and which are synthesized on the scale of several millimoles, classical organic chemical separation methods may be utilized, including extraction, precipitation, and crystallization. Eor separation of complex mixtures and for products having high specific activity, such as those labeled with tritium, etc, chromatographic methods utilizing paper, thin... [Pg.438]

This is the one example in which metal is not the substrate. Corrosion takes on a new meaning the coating here is required to protect the substrate from direct attack by corrosive substances, from water to more powerful household or industrial chemicals, such as grease, alcohols and bleach. We are concerned with the industrial application of thin protective layers to paper (e.g. labels), card (e.g. playing cards) and many wooden articles, including industrially finished doors, window frames and, particularly, furniture. [Pg.634]

Optically active molecules show circular dichroism. Their extinction coefficients f l and are different and change as a function of wavelength. Using a suitable spectroelectrochemical cell, Af = fl -which is usually small compared to conventional extinction coefficients, can be measured. Combined with the special properties of a thin layer cell kinetic data can be extracted from CD-data [01 Liu]. (Data obtained with this method are labelled CD.)... [Pg.274]

Uniformly labeled 2,4-dichlorophenol- C (purchased from New England Nuclear Corp, Boston, Mass.) was used in the tracer preparation. This provided a label at all carbon positions in the dibenzo-dioxin structure. 2,7-Dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin- C after initial cleanup by fractional sublimation, contained approximately 5% of an impurity, detected by thin layer chromatography (TLC) which gave mass peaks at 288, 290, 292, and 294 in the mass spectrometer, consistent with a trichloro-hydroxydiphenyl oxide. This is probably the initial condensation product of the Ullman reaction and is most likely 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-4-chlorophenol. It was removed easily by extractions with aqueous... [Pg.3]

Figure 2. Thin-layer radiochromatogram of urine (100 il) from rats injected with labeled PbTx-3. TLC plates were developed in two sequential solvent systems chloroform ethyl acetate ethanol (50 25 25 80 10 10). Radioactive zones were scraped and counted in a liquid scintillation counter. Native PbTx-3 runs at 13 cm. Figure 2. Thin-layer radiochromatogram of urine (100 il) from rats injected with labeled PbTx-3. By combining our images of these walls and their constituent polymers during chemical extraction, with data from immunogold labelling of thin-sectioned material, we were able to construct a simple structural model of the primary cell wall of onion (Fig 3). [Pg.92]

Fig 5 Immunogold labelling on thin sections of low-temperature embedded cell walls from 9-day old tobacco cells with JIM 5, a monoclonal antibody that recognises a relatively unesterified pectic epitope. Cell walls of elongating cells label very weakly, but material that is being secreted into the culture medium labels strongly. The old part of the wall is labelled but new wall material is not. [Pg.102]

Figure 2. Advanced stage of barley leaf penetration by C. sativus. The pathogen has penetrated the anticlinal cell wall junction between two host epidermal cells (e). The fungal appressorium (a) is visible above the cell comer. The host cell comer matrix has been displaced by an enlarged hyphal element (h) situated between the thin cell walls of the host epidermal cells. The host epidermal cell walls have been densely labeled with the cellulase-gold probe. An intercellullar hyphal element (ih) is present within the penetrated host cell. Bar = 1 pM. Figure 2. The effectiveness of a crude oil demulsifier is correlated with the lowering of the shear viscosity and the dynamic tension gradient of the oil-water interface. The interfacial tension relaxation occurs faster with an effective demulsifier [1714]. Short relaxation times imply that interfacial tension gradients at slow film thinning are suppressed. Electron spin resonance experiments with labeled demulsifiers indicate that the demulsifiers form reverse micellelike clusters in the bulk oil [1275]. The slow unclustering of the demulsifier at the interface appears to be the rate-determining step in the tension relaxation process. [Pg.327]

Fig. 2.1 Nuclear resonance absorption of y-rays (Mossbauer effect) for nuclei with Z protons and N neutrons. The top left part shows the population of the excited state of the emitter by the radioactive decay of a mother isotope (Z, N ) via a- or P-emission, or K-capture (depending on the isotope). The right part shows the de-excitation of the absorber by re-emission of a y-photon or by radiationless emission of a conversion electron (thin arrows labeled y and e , respectively)... Another way to preserve elderberries is by canning them. Add 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice to each quart of elderberries. Fill clean, sterilized jars, leaving 1/2 inch of head room. Add a thin syrup made by boiling 4 cups of water with 2 cups of sugar. Be sure to leave the 1/2-inch headroom. Put on clean lids with screw tops. Process in a boiling water bath (212 F°/100°C), pints for 15 minutes and quarts for 20 minutes. Remove the jars. Cool. Label and enjoy all winter. [Pg.78]

Figure 7. The occupation number densities as functions of wave vector for Na. The thick curves labeled (100), (110) and (111) represent the three principal directions within the first Brillouin zone, obtained by the FLAPW-GWA. The thin solid curve is obtained from an interacting electron-gas model [27]. The dash-dotted line represents the Fermi momentum. [Pg.96]

Polypropylene film is found in a variety of applications. Films are thin plastic sheets with thicknesses less than 250 pm. Applications for these films include candy mappers, plastic label material, electrical capacitors (which requires very pure polymer), and fiber glass insulation backing. There are two general categories of polypropylene films unoriented and oriented. Films are manufactured through either a cast or a blown film extrusion process. Oriented films exhibit improved strength relative to unoriented films. This means that they can be... [Pg.313]

Chemicals. Purified, P Cj-labelled alachlor (specific activity = 17 mCi/mM), butylate (specific activity = 2.54 mCi/mM) and metolachlor (specific activity = 4.5 mCi/mM) were used in the leaching, adsorption, and diffusion studies. The radiopurity of these compounds was greater than 95% as determined by thin-layer chromatography. All other studies were conducted using analytical grade, non-radioactive material (purity 5 95%). [Pg.232]
